Is it just me or does Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika really only have five episodes?

I was kind of assuming it would be like any other anime I've ever looked into, with about fifteen seasons that I would need to catch up on in order to have even the slightest idea what's going on.

It's new this season so it's still ongoing, but it looks to be slated for 12 episodes anyway. No DBZ style episode padding thankfully. Most of the best animes are only a couple of seasons long at most.
