    Default Argh... Die computer, die!

Hmmm, haven't made a topic in computer tech before, mainly because I don't really know much about computers, but my computer is going crappy right now and I don't know how to fix it .

Before anyone says that it would be a better idea to search for a site with information and stuff, I have to tell ya that I'm trying to get this done quickly before the computer decides to reset itself or something AGAIN.

    My computer is...
    800 mhz intel celeron processor
    128 mb sdram
    20.4 gb ultra dma hd
    with Windows ME.
It's an HP Pavilion... I dunno if I just said anything relevant just then, but that's what it says on the sticker on the hard drive .

Here's the problem: my computer has been acting up really bad for no reason at all lately. It only started a couple of days ago and I scanned the computer for a virus. It found one, but it's deleted it now. It was called indexars[1].htm. I don't know anything about that virus, meh.

The problems have persisted though. They are as follows:

*Computer just decides to freeze up before it's even finished loading from startup. I can fix this usually but it's annoying nonetheless.
*Sometimes when I open a folder or the internet (it usually lets me connect before it decides to do this) the screen just turns grey and there's nothing but the mouse left.
*Sometimes the taskbar decides it doesn't want to be a taskbar... er... it functions fine apart from the fact that it doesn't have the thingies that you click on to open windows... jeez I'm bad at explaining these things... they're those little button thingies in the middle of the taskbar!
*Often if I press ctrl+alt+del to fix one of these problems the entire screen goes green, and graphics become patchy. I just decided to keep using the computer like it was the first time this happened (yesterday, ugh) and it was kinda entertaining to see what everything looked like. I tried running some emus but they wouldn't work because of graphics problems, and I captured a couple of screenshots of the green version of windows and saved them with paint. After a while the computer froze up and had a weird picture of like green static... I had to shut it down and I looked at the pics later and they looked like they should normally, so yea...

I think there's more but I can't really remember, any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as I'm getting really annoyed with it.

    Default reinstalling time.

quite a mess you got their well, to not waste your time in trying to figure out what one or even two things are screwing your computer, the best thing to do is do a format and re-install your o/s. Especially after a virus was found on your putter, the best way of guarenteeing that any virus is truely gone is to format. Also If you can switch to a better o/s like windows 98 or windows xp. A defrag shouldn't help your situation.

Also to the rest of the people who are reading this, its a good idea just to format your hd atleast once a year. Its like giving your putter its yearly "doctors" fix/check-up.

I don't know if HP computers have them but IBM computers came with a recovery disc that formats the HD and reinstalls everything by itself.
You definitly need to format that HD.
If it continues you should call HP tecnical support.
If you bought it a year ago you still have full guarantee from HP

    Here're some likely problems:
    1) Your video card got loose
    2) The power supply got loose
    3) You got voltage fluctuations
    4) The socket connecting your video card to monitor got loose
    5) Your computer is over heating (very unlikely)
    6) Your BIOS got screwed
    7) Windows is generally mis-behaving.
    8) You have an IRQ/Resource conflict
    Solutions:
    1) Open your PC, press it in, slightly though.
    2) Check the back of your PC, make sure everything is twenty tight.
    3) Check your UPS or whatever you got.
    4) Check the back of your PC again
    5) Try turning on the air conditioner
    6) Show it to some dude who knows more about BIOS viruses and BIOS recovery
    7) Format/Re-install windows, try XP this time around.
    8) Check your CMOS/Device Manager and select auto settings to any device which has conflicts.

Well, I can't say more than that, it can either be hardware or software, or even pestware, you got rats in your home ??

Rats.... yes. I got a BIG rat problem and it's my brother.

Well best thing to do is to check all the connections, make sure they are clean, and reformat your computer (Give it an overhall). Espally after finding a virus... It could still be on the computer somewhere messing things up... (It's happend to me a few times.) Well good luck.

Well what company hard drive you have? I had a IBM one 40GB came with my DELL. It had similar problems like u. THen it just wouldn't start up. So Dell came in and gave me a new one. That broke also. Reformated Broke again. Looked inside also IBM. WTF! So don't get IBM hard drives. My idea for u is get 256MB more MB then go ahead and give yourself something good. Get XP. Or forget that and Reinstall ME or 98. But maybe consider getting a Maxtor or Seagate or Western Digital OR anything other than IBM.

BTW how nessesary is it that I defrag my drive? COuld it screw things up or is it only good.

#2 Should I install my Norton Anti Virus 2002?

and #3 Wouldn't reformating mean reinstalling everything? I have like 10GB of videos and roms and ISOs and Music and images and docs and I don't feel like burning it all on CD just so I can reformat. Is there an easier way or should I just not reformat every year. Sorry I talk so much. It's just that I know how it feels to have the worst comp it the whole world. Cause that's what I have/had.

Well I have 19 gigs of roms/isos/mp3s and I don't even have a CD burner :O. Plus, if it is the virus, then I could just reinfect the system if I did...

Damn when I had ME weird stuff exactly like that happened all the time. I'm thinking its just a problem with ME and not some virus but here's some offhand advice I have from my experience with ur problem:

    1) like MasJ said, make sure ur video card is in the slot correctly
    2) make sure the hard drive cable is tight on both ends
    3) check to make sure your cpu fan is running normally
    4) MAKE SURE your RAM is fine and doesnt have errors (I think this is the most probable)
    5) try running in safe mode and see if everything seems normal
    6) uninstall any unnecessary programs or recently installed programs that may be causing problems
    7) Reinstall Internet Explorer
    6) Reinstall Windows (preferably one that isnt so dysfunctional)

violineb Defragging doesnt cause problems, it should only help (although Im not sure what happens if you have a bad shutdown while you're defragging)

If you have Norton theres no reason not to have it on. Much better than Viruscan.

And personally I dont format my hard drive every year (or week like some CS freaks) because a slight performance drop isnt anything to worry about. Besides the hassle isnt worth it. The best way to do it is buy a new hard drive to back up to, back it up using Norton Ghost/Drive Image or something, reformat your hard drive, copy your files back, then return the new hard drive.

Hmmmm, I'm gonna see if I can upgrade the computer a bit and install XP. What is incredibly annoying is that I had the opportunity to get a CD of XP free, legit, and I passed it up, because all I had heard of it was bad news and I am an idiot .

Because I'm a n00b to this sorta thing, would anyone mind telling me what sort of upgrades I need? My stats are at the beginning of the thread... keep in mind that I'm poor .

if i decide to defrag, do i have to worry about loss of data and stuff? cause if i do decide to defrag, i might want to back up my stuff first.

Well, at least in NT, i know the NTFS file system has some safeguards to protect the hard drive from data loss. Im not sure about ME or 98 tho.
