I think the problem maybe fundamental to why the sidescroller sonic games are so popular, but the 3d sonic games are decent to downright garbage. I think it may be safe to say that for the time being, sonic should stay sidescrolling and should avoid the 3d until sega can figure out what they are doing wrong. Perhaps they can ask Nintendo what they did right for mario or are the fundamentals too different?
Sonic and Knuckles had a slot on top that allowed it to conbine with other sonic games similar to how a gameshark or game genie had a slot on top. Sonic 3 was so big they had to split it into two games. So you could combine Sonic 3 with Sonic and Knuckles to have the uberness that is also known as Sonic 3 and Knuckles, just like the game was made to be played. You could also combine it with sonic 2 to play the entire 2nd game as knuckles. If you combined it with the first game and did something, you could play all of the bonus levels from 3 as sonic, tails, or knuckles. Also did you know Michael Jackson did the music for Sonic 3?
