So, I spent most of the night trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with my newsgroup access. There were TONS of JAP DC games posted to the site I go to for NZB files, and whenever I tried to download them, they all failed. So, I upgraded to the newest Grabit with no luck. (After desperately trying to remember my password, I got it, but the download still failed). So I downgrade back to the version I like, but the server wouldn't connect. After two more installs, I get the program set right, only to find out that some dumbass editor posted these games 45 days after they were originally uploaded. They're long gone off the NG servers :eyeball:

Eww. the new Grabit client is shit. Took me forever to get it working. I just donated the other day to NzbMatrix for the 200 day retention. It was worth every penny.

That sucks man. That was one of my bigger issues with the newsgroups. Well, my only issue really. Sometimes you'd see shit posted, but it was way out of date.

I'm bored, so I could probably do it.

I suck at editing/critiquing, but I'll do it.

Alright. It ends abruptly, what with it being a work in progress and all.

    Sans Rose Colored Glasses

I've played plenty of games over the years. I've played some real gems,
and I've played crap that you would wipe your ass with if using the
media they came on in such a manner wouldn't likely lead to rectal
bleeding. I've played so many games that I can't remember even a
handful of my experiences playing most of them, but I do remember, in
vivid color, the games I played back when I first started out as a
    gamer.

I can't start this bit out until I've told you all that I was very easy to
please as a child. I was so into gaming that as long as a game's only
success wasn't how thoroughly and completely it mastered sucking as a
piece of entertainment software, I was content just to be playing it. I
never really owned my own games as a kid, as my parents were more into
renting them than they were dropping a weeks slave-wages earned in the
salt mines on them. And rent them I did, and constantly. I think that
being sort of deprived of a collection of my own caused me to develop
something in my brain that afforded me extreme tolerance for games that
    I would've vomited on otherwise.

For example, I rented Athena as a kid, and I didn't stop playing it
until I had to return it. No individual possessing an even remotely
analytical mind would subject themselves to crap of that magnitude,
much less keep on playing it until the option was essentially removed
from them by outside influences, but that's who I was. A gamer-whore
whos John was whatever game I managed to get on a given week, and who
was too happy to be playing games to spend much time thinking about
whether or not they were any good.

The aim of this ongoing series is to address the problem I had as a
kid. Are the games that I loved back then as good now as I remember
them being? Are they the gems that nostalgia tells me that they are, or
are they entirely different creatures when viewed sans rose-colored
glasses? Let's take a look at our first game and find out, shall we?

    Castlevania
    Release Date: 1987
    Platform: NES

While it wasn't my first game, I used to spend quite a bit of time with
the family's copy of Castlevania. It was one of the few games they
purchased, and I just about wore my fingers to the bone playing it over
and over again. Suffice it to say that I loved the game as a kid. How
does it fare now? Read on for the answer.

    Graphics:

Back in my formative years, well before the advent of fancy HD-TVs and
ultra-high resolution graphics so realistic that they'll make your
eyeballs peel, games were pretty simplistic looking. However, not
having incite into the marvels that the future would bring, we were
pretty satisfied with what we saw on our TV screens via our Nintendo
Entertainment systems. Or at least I was. I thought that Castlevania
looked great. The animations, the backgrounds, the creative enemy
designs: it all came together to form what was to my young and
    inexperienced eyes a visual masterpiece.

I'm happy to report that the game stands up well today, over twenty
years after its initial release. With everything looking rather simple
it's obviously not a graphical powerhouse. The effective but
understated color palette helps to set the mood, and the character and
enemy sprites are attractive in that charming old-school way, as is
fitting of a game that was released relatively early on in the NES
lifespan. I may have overstated Castlevania's technical achievements
in the graphics department back when I didn't know any better, but it's
certainly competent in that area, and looks good enough that you won't
find yourself disconnected from the game by things that look absurd or
out of place. Well, with the exception of that little humping midget
thing that is. That thing still sends chills up my spine every time I
    see it.

    Gameplay:

Well, Newzbin brags about hella retention, but they are just an index. You're still at the mercy of your ISP's servers unless you spend your mom's grocery money like Corey. You get a game, but you starve to death while playing it.

I think Verizon is like 10 days, max.

If you want multiple opinions, I'll do it as well. If not, let Ray or Mexi do it.

edit: And you've posted it before I finished typing one handed. *begins reading*
