I've been on XP for 2 years. Didn't bother formatting.
Frankly, it's a beast. RAWR. No slowdowns whatsover, 2GB seems to be decent with XP.
And now that i'm moving to Vista soon, i'm changing CPU, board and putting 4GB of ram. Go figure.
