Exclamation Windows XP won't start / function. Need some MAJOR help.

Long story short, sister was on, said AVG said there was a virus, couldn't repair/ext, kept popping up. Shut computer down for the night, and today it doesn't work.

I try starting in safe-mode, normal-mode. All that, doesn't work.

I'm using Xp. So I made my computer boot from the CD first and I run the CD. I press R to go to computer repair install but when it asks for the administrator password, my password doesn't work. I am using the correct password, positive on that part, perhaps picking the wrong logon but the only one it lets me pick is 1. There are two administrative accounts on the computer, if that means anything.

I'm trying to not have to do a fresh install so that I can keep all my files (I have about 20 gigs of music and some pictures, and really important username/password files on there. And other various important files. )

Anyways, I would GREATLY appreciate any help I can get. If you have any suggestions or questions please comment.

Does "last known good configuration" show up when booting the system?

If not, I suggest just reinstalling XP, all your data will stay on the comp (unless you delete the partition).

Last known and safe mode and all that fail. Fresh install will save it all huh? interesting, keep the partition.

Also when I boot up the computer now I notice I don't have any 'slaves'... only masters. I assume I use to see something under slaves, but, I dunno. Perhaps I'm just being paranoid now.

Thanks for the info though, I'll try that and hopefully all will be well. Thanks.

Edit: Hmm... I haven't got around to it yet, will shortly. But I just wonder... all this happend 'cause of that virus. If my files stay, I wonder if that virus will as well. I suppose I'll get to that when it comes, though.

Yeah, all of your stuff will stay, they'll just be in a different location.

If you have access to another computer (and the permission from whoever owns it to open it up), the easiest option is simply install your "bad" hard drive into the other computer, boot from the "good" drive in the second computer, backup your files (do a virus scan with whatever program is on the other computer before you transfer them over), and format the "bad" drive, then put the old (now empty) drive back in the first computer, and reinstall windows.

You'll lose settings in the UI, but you'd lose them with a repair install anyway.

I'd like to try your idea Cheezy, but I can't. Currently using my Wii for this. Anyways, ran into a problem. When it came to the installing Windows part, a window pops-up saying: Fatal Error , prevents set-up from occuring- one of the componets could not be installed - does not match the verification information present in the componet manifest. ( I summarized a lot of that. )

It also gives me a system setup log with some more info, but it looks like it is basically saying the same thing.

So, could use some more help if you guys don't mind.

Does it begin the installation at all, or does it say this somewhere before it starts the install.

Yes ALL THE DATA will stay including the VIRUS.

Backup ur data and do a clean install and scan all of ur backed up data before putting back on the computer.
Thats assuming u have a method of backing up ur stuff up.
I use an external HDD(60GB), but you may need more than that if u have a lot of games/anime/video/pics/music.
U can get a 250GB HDD on newegg for about $60

did u try finding the file that is infected/problematic and [Insert method of deleting none deletable\protected\system files here].

The virus will not be in active mode. Which means that as long as an infected file is not run, it will do no harm.

*sigh* I wrote a more detailed reply but had a network error. (thats annoying when i dont have a keyboard)
Anyways, I'll just make this short & sweet then. The fatal error message pops-up right before the actual install, that is to say that on the left side of the screen it says "installing windows" and has the approximate time it will take. This is also when you actually have a cursor. I hope I explained we'll enough. Though if you would like more info just let me know, thanks.

I suppose that is possible. But I've successfully used the CD last time to install. The CD is old, but doesn't have a massive scratch or anything, I do have a Windows CD for a Dell computer, though. Would that be worth trying? My PC is custom built.

The Dell disc is likely an OEM copy, if that's the case, it'll ask you for a key/activation.

Ok but not out loud please, see rule #2

    2) No Warez - This means no requesting, sharing, linking, etc, of retail games for computers. This also includes such things as programs, non-game related music, movies, games, cracks, serial numbers, keygenerators, and links to them. This is an emulation community, so we don't support nor tolerate the trading/linking to, of these things here.

Anyways, OEM copies are normally restore disks and will not require a key. If it does require a key, there will be a sticker somewhere on your computer case, usually the side or pack, with the key on it, like this:

SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file \I386\asms\1000\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN on line 4.

That's the error. It seems to be a somewhat common problem. I'm trying to find the solution myself but I figure you guys could help me while I do that as well.

Some things I've read say it's maybe a CD scratch-like error. Another one said it's something already on the HDD itself causing the error, which sounds likely for me as I think the CD is perfectly fine.

However, I found that Dell CD. It is a reinstallation CD for XP home edition service pack 2. My computer is not a Dell, it is XP Pro, and Service Pack 1. So we'll see how this goes.

But, yes, I'm still trying to salvage my computer's files and would greatly appreciate your guys help.

Also, another reason why I don't think it is a CD scratch error or anything of the like is I didn't get the "I/O" error on my error message.

Update: - I've tried the Dell CD and I get the same error. However, perhaps If I try the reinstall operation fresh it will work, I simply put it in and restarted from when I get the error message. Also, maybe it's because it is a different XP version and Service Pack. What do you guys suggest? And upon further research it looks like my Liteon DVDRW drive may be the problem. I don't know much about replacing or anything so that would be an issue.
