    Default Configuring XP network help.

So I'm trying to set up a network between two machines that run XPPro SP2. I'm halfway through, the problem is, is that machine one can access machine two just fine, but machine two can't access machine one. The error is

"//machine is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

    Access is denied."

Now, I went though the basics a couple of times already (making sure TCP/IP and all those other stuff in the LAN properties are checked, and made sure that I'm at least sharing one file on both computers,) but just had no luck.

Does anyone have any idea? Oh, the network is set up through a router if it makes any difference.

Make sure you've gone through the network setup wizard on both copmuters and that they're set up exactly the same (file/printer sharing is on, etc.).

Go to tools > Folder Options > view and scroll down to the bottom and turn simple file sharing off as well.

Yeah I've gone through the setup on both machines. I just redid both to make sure.

I tried with simple file sharing both on and off, but still it had no effect.

right click a folder in machine 1, any folder, and share it with full control and see if that helps any.

Hmmm. I tried alternating the method I use to access the machine. What I did earlier, was try to access it using workgroups which failed, and right now I tried accessing it using the run command \\machinename\folder and also through mapping a network drive and they were both successful.

Right now I can access both machines perfectly using the other two methods, but not through workgroups, which is perfectly fine as it serves its purpose, but I wouldn't say no to anyone who happens to know the reason why my workgroups are fucked up..

Panda Man, all my folders are shared with full control already.

Make sure the workgroup wasn't reset on one of the machines, I've had a machine default back to MSHOME from WORKGROUP before. When you manually connected to machine 1, did you have to login?

I've had problems connecting to my Xbox with firewalls active. It's also blocked filesharing from Xbox > PC and vice versa as well. (I know this thread is about connecting computer to computer but it's the same idea really.) This has occurred to me with both Sygate and Zone Alarm firewalls. Windows Firewall also gets in the way, but I've got that off as well.

Try disabling firewalls on both computers.

I've set both workgroups as MSHOME and I've just checked, they're both still MSHOME.

That's the first thing that came to mind when I first encountered the problem. Didn't help disabling the firewalls. But shouldn't that be irrelevant since I can access both computers now albeit not through workgroups?

see if anything here helps, or at least learns you up on it a bit.

when i configured my domain here at home, after building, formatting, and configuring the domain controller and dns server and getting the rest of the computers on the domain, i spent 6 hours trying to get my gaming rig on the domain. tried everything i could think of, til i read a doc, and realized i had simple file sharing on. i wanted to shoot myself.

after that i discovered a problem with the wireless desktop in the family room. you cant log on to the domain without network connectivity. you cant get network connectivity til you log on and start the wireless connection app.
