Basically, it's impossible to go back in time and kill yourself. Well, you can, but it won't have any effect on anything. Let's say you go back a day, and kill your "yesterday" self. The events of yesterday still take place, but with one exception. Your "yesterday" self never gets into the time machine, never goes back in time, and never kills his "yesterday" self.
So what they did with the failsafe, is went back in time four days, prevented their "four days ago" selves from entering the time machines, and then worked out the next four days to prevent any of the events from happening, thus solving their current problems. The problem comes when they forget to off the "4 days ago" selves, and the past versions go back to living life, which means that now something needs to be done to prevent them from screwing things up again.
Right?
