Before Spain there were medieval kingdoms fighting to get the iberian peninsula back, Leon, Castile, etc
So, initially Portuguese lands were a Leon county, for a generation only though, the first generation was a man who married with theresa of Leon, one of the king's daughters; but in the second generation of counts (afonso henriques) rebelled (against his mother and his mother's love affair, actually),cutted ties with Leon and asked for independence to the Vatican.
Leon kept existing after that for a while longer, until one of their king's died and they were invaded by Castile.
So really Portugal was not a part of Spain (or Kingdom of Castile) to begin with; we're the only of the medieval countries who managed to keep our independence though; in middle ages we were attacked and even lost our independence to Spain, but managed to reclaim it back.
We are a separate country, including language (including phonetic differences, our being more rich), habits (we don't do naps), gastronomy and currency (before the Euro currency came along).
