    Default Spanish vs. Portuguese

ok d00ds & dudettes, i have a question about Europe. What's the deal with Spain & Portugal? I've been learning Spanish & there's a hella lot of Portuguese in Spanish & vice versa. WTF happened to the two countries? Were they once the same country & got divided up for some reason? did the King get pissed because other country beat his country at a soccer match or something? or let me guess. It's over a woman somehow. LOL

i spent 3 hours researching this on teh internutz. No clue as to why Spain & Portugal are two separate countries with everything about the same. Wikipedia=TOTAL FAIL!!1

Well, what do you expect, we are neighbours after all, both part of the iberian peninsula our languages are both romance languages, descending from latin.

    Sweden - Denmark - Norway.
    Germany - Holland.
    Spain - Italy - Portugal.

Just how stupid are you, really?

Edit: Your definition of "everything" puzzles me.

Well, I'm Portuguese so perhaps I can shed some light into that.

Before Spain there were medieval kingdoms fighting to get the iberian peninsula back, Leon, Castile, etc

So, initially Portuguese lands were a Leon county, for a generation only though, the first generation was a man who married with theresa of Leon, one of the king's daughters; but in the second generation of counts (afonso henriques) rebelled (against his mother and his mother's love affair, actually),cutted ties with Leon and asked for independence to the Vatican.

Leon kept existing after that for a while longer, until one of their king's died and they were invaded by Castile.

So really Portugal was not a part of Spain (or Kingdom of Castile) to begin with; we're the only of the medieval countries who managed to keep our independence though; in middle ages we were attacked and even lost our independence to Spain, but managed to reclaim it back.

We are a separate country, including language (including phonetic differences, our being more rich), habits (we don't do naps), gastronomy and currency (before the Euro currency came along).

Interesting read, thanks for sharing. Unfortunately we'll have to delete your post. Too much intelligence you see, it would make some of our fellow members head explode

The Portuguese like to say they were unjustly invaded and conquered during the 15th century. They don't like to admit it was mostly because their king was honking mad, marched a huge army into North Africa, and got royally trounced, which left Uncle Phil of Spain one of the best claimants to the throne.

    Random fact:

'Cortez the killer' by Neil Young is banned in Spain.

I like the siestas, even if you don't sleep it's some time off you get in the middle of the day, that's kinda relaxing.

I always find it strange that in some areas at those hours the streets are totally empty. But on the other hand I like how they have a good night street life/envyronment, they don't seem to stay home at night and instead go for a walk. It's like that everywhere I go in Spain (might be because I go there in festive dates) and I really like that, here at 8 pm there's no one on the street; kinda confuses me, really.

I wouldn't say injustly, D. Sebastian died/disapeared in Alcacer Quibir and we needed a king, the spanish King was the son of a protuguese princess; he invaded portugal (so it was not totally pacific) but even though we lost our independence (which was not a good thing) I was always told everything kept being the same while the first king was alive, we were kinda like a "autonomous" region and supposedly we got some respect. Problem was when his son and grandchild got to the throne; Portugal was threated as a outcast to pay more taxes and all; I really don't know if they'd have rebeled otherwise.

I haven't really be told in my instruction that the first spanish king was bad, though.

It deppends on the cities, some of them have a really active and boisterous nightlife and it's easy to find the streets crowded even early specially the areas where people hang out. We are weird like that
