Oh you'll want to read up on Second-stage boot loaders, the main boot loader is the BIOS selecting what to boot.

I fucked up removing my ubunutu partition and used MS-dos to fix it.

Won't work with Vista. Vista doesn't use NT loader. You'll have to let it do an auto-boot repair from the CD because it thinks your incapable of fixing anything on your own
