I figured it was the save state (what else could it be?), but was hoping we could figure out a solution where he wouldn't have to start from the beginning.
Actually, I remember reading somewhere that you should avoid using save states with Valkyrie Profile as they tend to cause these sort of problems with that game.

Correct, but I always assumed that was just with ePSXe. I guess Elmdor had to sacrifice 30+ minutes for us to know for sure.

EDIT: We tried those memcards form GameFAQs. Of course, they didn't work, but when using MemcardManager (aldo's), it said there was a game on it...

You could have just loaded the save state then ejected and reloaded the memory cards afterwards. (Now why didn't I think of that before?)

No I was saying to load the save state then after the save state was loaded go into the options and eject all the memory cards and load them again to see if that worked. I should update the memory card information and then allow you to read them correctly. Using save states is always risky which is why I always make sure I make a memory card save whenever I can.
