Help! I have no idea how to work cat 5e crossover cable

Hello, I need some help, I'm trying to transfer some files over from my fianc�s computer to mine. I was told by a friend that a simple cat 5 cable would do the trick. So I went down and bought myself one. Only problem... I have no idea how to set it up. I've never set up a network in my entire life and the network wizard doesn�t work. It goes through all the steps than... Nothing. Anything would be appreciated, faqs, websites or personal insights.

Both Computers are running XP home.
