Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3. Fantastic sound, and the diversity of characters was quite remarkable in the latter.

Ok, I know something even older-school then earthbound. EarthboundZero, for NES. It's in japanese, but who cares! Someone oughta translate it sometime.
But my fav old-school games are the sonic series (on genesis), and the FF series (on NES).

I liked River City Ransom a lot as well. Imagine ... a decade later, people will come along and say that FF8 is old-school stuff.

Chrono Trigger, whoever disagrees I will personally take out back and beat with a ugly stick.
Besides that i'd have to say FFV and FFVI, they were indeed great classics..
