Well in that case...![]()
Uhm... I feel compelled to put "mine" there, but I can't be arsed to look it up. Bonus points to anyone who can find and actually understand the thing (I sure as hell can't)!![]()
Well... I don't have to remember the lyrics to my national anthem... simply because Spain's national anthom has no lyrics!Originally Posted by Castlevania
Unless you sing along the classic drunk song about our old dictator/monarchs's nether regions... The anthem is a very cheesy and epic kingdom-style tune, in case you're wondering.
I know tons of Americans that can't recite the entire pledge of allegiance, and twice that many don't know all of the lyrics to the anthem. So what? They're just words, you don't need fancy poetry to show that you love your country.
Edit: I happened to read the Mexican national anthem in a book about national anthems about a week ago! 2 sentences? Hell no... it was about a half a page... the lyrics are about war and independence, not very original nowadays.
Edit 2: The Mexican anthem, in all its glory:
... damn, that actually sounds pretty fucking cool. The English translation is pretty lame though.
Mexicanos, al grito de guerra
El acero aprestad y el bridn;
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra
Al sonoro rugir del can.
Cia oh patria! tus sienes de oliva
De la Paz el arcngel divino,
Que en el cielo tu eterno destino
Por el dedo de Dios se escribi.
Mas si osare un extrao enemigo
Profanar con su planta tu suelo,
Piensa oh patria querida! que el cielo
Un soldado en cada hijo te dio.
Guerra, guerra sin tregua al que intente
De la patria manchar los blasones!
Guerra, guerra! Los patrios pendones
En las olas de sangre empapad.
Guerra, guerra! En el monte, en el valle
Los caones horrsonos truenen
Y los ecos sonoros resuenen
Con las voces de Unin! Libertad!
Antes, patria, que inermes tus hijos
Bajo el yugo su cuello dobleguen,
Tus campias con sangre se rieguen,
Sobre sangre se estampe su pie.
Y tus templos, palacios y torres
Se derrumben con hrrido estruendo,
Y sus ruinas existan diciendo:
De mil hroes la patria aqu fue.
Patria! patria! Tus hijos te juran
Exhalar en tus aras su aliento,
Si el clarn con su blico acento
Los convoca a lidiar con valor.
Para ti las guirnaldas de oliva!
Un recuerdo para ellos de gloria!
Un laurel para ti de victoria!
Un sepulcro para ellos de honor!
Mexicanos, al grito de guerra
El acero aprestad y el bridn,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra
Al sonoro rugir del can.
Mexicans, at the cry of battle
lend your swords and bridle;
and let the earth tremble at its left
upon the roar of the cannon.
Your forehead shall be girded, oh fatherland, with olive garlands
by the divine archangel of peace,
For in heaven your eternal destiny
has been written by the hand of God.
But should a foreign enemy
Profane your land with his sole,
Think, beloved fatherland, that heaven
gave you a soldier in each son.
War, war without truce against who would attempt
to blemish the honor of the fatherland!
War, war! The patriotic banners
saturate in waves of blood.
War, war! On the mount, in the vale
The terrifying cannon thunder
and the echoes nobly resound
to the cries of union! liberty!
Fatherland, before your children become unarmed
Beneath the yoke their necks in sway,
May your countryside be watered with blood,
On blood their feet trample.
And may your temples, palaces and towers
crumble in horrid crash,
and their ruins exist saying:
The fatherland was made of one thousand heroes here.
Fatherland, fatherland, your children swear
to exhale their breath in your cause,
If the bugle in its belligerent tone
should call upon them to struggle with bravery.
For you the olive garlands!
For them a memory of glory!
For you a laurel of victory!
For them a tomb of honor!

Since we're talking about anthems, I'm sure some people will love this one.
The idea is nice, but the technical side isn't. That page just is made in a very annoying way (animated gif as background... no!)Originally Posted by Reagan1980

You're SO right. My aunt's husband (He's Canadian) will sing the anthem when he gets drunk.Originally Posted by Schutzstaffel

He think's it's awful too.
But to hear him ramble through it to the tune of xmas music?
Priceless.
The fella that sings that one should be shot if he ever dares to sing again, even if drunk. He makes all those pop-singers sound nice in comparison.Originally Posted by Reagan1980

These are the lyrics that some people like to sing along to Spain's national anthem, bonus points if you understand it. It should provide quite a cackle.

Supposedly the Mexican Anthem is amongst the most beautiful ones in the whole world, I think it ranks up there for the best two, along with France's, but I'm not sure... Also, don't know who actually said that, I just heard it on TV once...
The thing is like... 16 verses long!! I think you put about half of it there, Soeru.Plus, you have to sing the chorus at the very beginning, the very end, and then between every verse!!
The official shortened version is just the first two verses plus the chorus, though... They made us sing that during school assembly every monday morning in elementary school...
EDIT: LOL! That's the best anthem ever!!![]()
I was actually born, and still live in Baltimore, the birthplace of the US anthem.
I've even visited Fort McHenry a number of times, which is where the battle that apparently inspired Francis Scott Key to write the anthem took place.
And here it is, in it's entirety for anyone who's curious:
U.S. national anthem:
Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
I only know the first stanza by heart.
Oh, and I wouldn't have booed that girl just for forgetting the lyrics. I'd have laughed, yeah, but not booed her--I don't take it personally when people forget things like that.
Guess I'm not much of a patriot![]()
