    Unhappy Trouble with Pokemon Snap

I'm currently playing pokemon snap on the Pj64 emulator, but the problem is that on the the 1st level (beach) none of my pictures have the option of being marked by prof. oak, Plus without getting them marked, i can't progress further.

Is there some special trick to it or something??

No graphics plugin yet works properly with this game. Glide64 is close (it will show the pics) however the scores you get will never be correct. It's a wierd game to emulate.

All the other levels you can move around. For some reason no emulator will let you move around on the first level. I guess we will have to wait and hopefully someone will have a breakthrough.

The impression I got from my tours around all the emu forums was that the photos would never be able to be scored properly because emu programmers would actually have to know how the original game programers scored them to be able to know how to do so.

You should never say never as, I'm sure if they put all their time and effort into making it work they might be successful...eventually, but I woundn't hold my breath for anything soon, as they usually want to focus on improving things in the emu that seem more achievable. It sounds as if using Glide as a graphic plugin is about as close as you can get for now, and the fact that Glide even incorporates the option to save your pictures shows that they are still trying which give me a little hope. It really sucks that it can't be emulated properly, as it was a really original game- I really liked it.

Yeah you've got it about right there. It's tough to get information about certain things, this one in particular seems like it'd use some odd method to score the pictures. I don't think this is a graphics plugin issue alone, though I'm not an author I'd say they'd have to be one or two fixes in the core to allow for this.

Things like this may well be cracked eventually though. For example, Banjo Tooie was for a long time unemulated, but I know a couple of the people who managed to get it working properly. I also know a little of the methods they used... very ingenious I'd have to say

The people that work on these things are DEFINATELY ingenious, and even though they would probably never actually PLAY pokemon snap themselves, they seem to love the challenge that emulating it properly presents (so here's hoping they do it- I'm patient). That to me is the primary reason they put up with all those people begging them to get their favourite game up and running, and asking (what is to them) absolutely basic and idiotically simple questions, that and they are all saints

Yes... they are very skilled... no doubt about that

I still have NO idea how that actually get a system emulated...

    VERY Impressive.

I was just wondering why they simply cant apply a N64 BIOS onto a emulator instead of programming every freakin' game The bios should then give the correct scores for photos. Like ePSXe that uses BIOS.

Um I think it is because of that darn cartridge format that nintendo used, instead of being nice and simple to duplicate like CD-Roms, cartridges are a bugger as they all have slightly different chips and save methods and so forth meaning head aches/fun times for those hard working emu authors.

Because it ain't quite as simple as that - believe me N64 programmers are far from being thick. The N64 doesn't have a Bios in the same way a PSX emulator does.

The games use Ucodes that tell the machine how to draw the graphics - the Ucodes are the ones that are incredibly tough to program. I ain't even gonna try and get technical on this one - but suffice to say your suggestion is not one that would ever work.

So is that why games like Star Wars Rogue Sqaudron won't work? Because they can't get the Ucode to work?

Yep that's about it. The Ucode isn't really well documented, and is probably a real ***** to reverse engineer. I am fairly confident it will be found out in the future though.

Once that Ucode falls I would expect Battle for Naboo to work also, as well as Indiana Jones perhaps.
