    You can increase either the FSB, the clock multiplier or the tweak up the voltage of the cpu. However the gain on todays cpus is is not significant so I would not risk doing it.

    well..they're all in the bios option.
    so if you go to bios (by pressing del in award screen), then go to cpu section, and the older system usually got their fsb set at 100 or 133.
    fsb x multipler = clock speed.

    Although overclocking does increase cpu speed by increase the fsb, it also increases memory speed, pci and agp speed and the cards attached to those buse's have to be able to handle the increase you will also have to by better cooling equipment i.e better cpu heatsink and fan and better case cooling coz although overclocking makes your comp faster that speed also produces heat and i'll bet your standard fans can't deal with it and you'll fry your cpu.

    So if your serious about doing it go do some research on the net and they research all the stuff your gonna need.

    but if your comp is as old as you say it is you'd be better off buying a new one. but it is your choice and if you do decide to overlcock have fun and i hope you learn something about your comp.

    DO NOT DO A FSB OVERCLOCK!!! You'll have a better chance of burning out more compenents if you do a FSB overclock.

    Stick with mulitplier overclock method that just focus on your cpu and not your whole system board.

    Listen the max speed you'll get is like an average of 5-10% increase in mhz speed. Tweak your system first before you want to overclock, and if the pc your trying to overclock is the only pc in the house DO NOT DO IT. Go to techspot.com and go in their guides section for tweaking your o/s.

    I hope that 486 is not your only computer in the house....

    Yes you can overclock any processor, you might have to do some tricks in order to do it on a 486 because old motherboard didn't initially give you bios options to overclock.

    Yes, doing anytype of overclocking on any cpu can cause damage. If that 486 is just picking up dust in the corner you can turn it into a hardware firewall/router/server using freesco.org software, or turn it into a jukebox (mp3 player), don't let that computer pick up dust put it to some use.

    Not at all. Just remove the case, make sure everything's in there nice and secure, and pick up a cheap desk fan, setting it to High and aiming it right at your motherboard. Then you can overclock away

    Okay I'm just going to close this thread.

    Overclocking = No

    It was only really useful at the time of 300mhz CPUs. If you do something stupid it's your own fault and we won't be held accountable.
