My Grandad's 4 cyl definitely needs a rebuild at 40k.

I would expect to have my first car (Corsa B or C) for 2-3 years (MOTs) at the most. Once its first fail is something really expensive I'll just get rid of it and move onto something else. People getting attached to cheap cars is something I'll never understand.

Hasn't had huge mileage really...maybe just needs the head to be pulled and freshened up, and possibly replace the rings.
May not need a rebore, and the bearings might be ok. Maybe some seals need to be replaced.
But shouldn't need a full rebuild.

All of this stuff can be done at home with access to a few things. Head should go into a shop; this would be the part that would cost $ but the rest can be done on the cheap if you do it all yourself.

It's easy to become attached to a car if you've had it long enough to know it well.
And if you can do a lot of stuff yourself it isn't really daunting to fix things instead of starting fresh with something else.

Once I get this Mazda on the road I'll probably keep it for 5 years or more. It doesn't have a computer so it's an easy car to keep maintaining until it is truly driven into the ground
But that doesn't mean I won't buy something else as a project at some stage, there are quite a few cars I wouldn't mind having in the shed as a project

Haven't heard back from the guy yet, would it be considered rude or impatient to call him and ask? Or would it show that I'm interested.

Pfft. Men. They say they'll call. . .

It depends on the individual in question. When I applied for a job as a kid, my mother badgered me to call and enquire because it shows "initiative" (women equate nagging with initiative). The guy gave me a big attitude that he had a pile of applications to go through and he could do his job without my input, because if he wanted to hire me HE would call ME.
So yeah, it's a coin toss whether you'll be impressing or annoying them.

Well, the reason I would be calling is because he said he will confirm Saturday was a good day for me to go to another local mall and do some "training"(not sure if it's paid or not) on Saturday. It sounded like he would confirm it that same night, but it also sounded like it could be another day he confirms it. I was thinking maybe tomorrow later in the afternoon to call, but today might show that I'm enthusiastic about it(which I am).

    No WORK!
I'm already in cahoots on how to grill and get wasted on a Californian beach.

Welp, I decided to call him, got a voicemail so I just left a brief message asking about it. Apologized for the inconvenience of calling him and such. Hopefully he doesn't get pissed I called to confirm about Saturday.

Between Michigan and California is just too damn high to fly you out here to teach a junior how to drink.
    Better luck next time?

Well maybe you'll just conveniently "forget" some of the things expected from you in return.
