Their conference more or less boiled down to:

We're running all those games they showed at their conference.
We also have these games (most of which are multiplats).
Your games are YOUR games. Fuck DRM and always online BS. Unlike SOME CONSOLES we aren't monsters.
We don't have BC because the tech doesn't allow it, but we have this thing that's sorta-kinda like BC. Because y'all like old games right? (Contrast: Microsoft was all "Old games? Who the fuck plays that shit? Shit's for fags. Backwards compatible? More like backwards thinking. Fags.")
Also we're a hundred dollars cheaper than their thing.

I think a lot of the delay was them meticulously tailoring the conference to basically just be a massive vivisection of Microsoft's entire platform. Because it sure as fuck sounded like one.

I mean, as long as they did that and talk about their hardware and software, it sounds like a rather successful conference.

Well I mean maybe the Wii U will have a strong showing.

    ...

Oh who am I kidding? Xbox has one hell of an uphill battle ahead of it.

I mean, Sony pulled it off with the PS3 so it's not exactly impossible for them to turn things around.

But uh... this might be a Saturn Scenario.

    'twas.

Although it's nice to see Ubisoft is still the epitome of game development.

less than 6 months to release on black flag and it couldn't get through a demo period.

    This bodes poorly.

Completely DRM free? That doesn't sound like Sony at all.
BC is a more recent topic really, I certainly don't expect it from any console. I lived without it for years so I'm indifferent.
No surprise there isn't "always online", that network would crash every 5 minutes.

Still, ps4 obviously seems like a better deal. But no purchase for me at launch, or in the near future.

    Ubisoft #1.

Also, I'm fully degenerate now, I won't go into details.

Normally I feel bad for the guys on stage when a game crashes, but not for this one.... they need to quit churning out AC games. I couldn't even make it through 3 - the games are stale no matter how pretty they may be

Well it's not the Dreamcast or anything, but yeah. All that stuff people were up in arms about (no sharing games, no reselling games, "licensing agreements", online activation, server connectivity, etc) are not part of the plan. It does remain to be seen whether or not a DEVELOPER or PUBLISHER implements it anyway (even if it's not Sony policy) and if one does it could just be a matter of time before it catches on (like online passes or DRM in this gen did). But as far as the console architecture itself goes, it's not enforcing it or giving developers free reign to do it and then be all "well the company that made the console said we should..." down the road (which means that when someone inevitably uses server authentication, we can just avoid buying that game in an attempt to send a message instead of it being an accepted practice out-of-the-gate)

I consider BC a major bonus. I like the idea that I can move forward with some of my purchases and library intact (or even grow one in the future if I can't). Plus there's no way I'll play every PS3 game I want when the PS4 is out, so the opportunity to go back and play something I missed is appreciated (like those classic releases of PS1/2 games that the PS3 has). Or an opportunity to throw more money at a developer/game I liked when I get a nostalgia rush. It's not a total deal breaker, but knowing that my suspicions about GK and there being some sort of nebulous BC is a hell of a plus in my book, regardless of what it'll be. And with PS+ there's a good bet that we'll be thrown a few bones by way of some old games. Might even find a nice hidden gem or two among them. Never a bad thing. Also, I somewhat view it as Sony at least trying to go the extra mile for its audience. Which shows some level of customer appreciation on their part. Compared to the quiet acknowledgement of Nintendo stating that BC isn't a go or Microsoft outright insulting people who want it in. Nintendo's being understandable (and highly forgivable) but Microsoft's doing little other than to give me an overwhelming feeling that their leadership is starting to sound suspiciously like the sort of people you meet in the average FPS game, and appear to be reveling in this "douchebag dudebro" image they're cultivating. Which makes me very, very resistant to handing them any money.

The guy on stage seemed to be silently pleading with the game to not crash when he started to notice the stuttering.

And then it crashed hard and out comes the vaudeville hook.

I didn't mean playing backups, I meant sharing digital games and content with no restrictions at all.
Hasn't happened with all that much stuff in this gen, but it does exist.

Is it confirmed that you need PS+ for MP? I've been expecting that for a while now.
But hopefully it means Sony might actually improve their network stability.

At least they won't lock you out of Netflix like MS does

It's probably similar-ish to the way the PS3/Vita/PSP is set up now. There's no extra limitations made public at this point. So, generally speaking, the status quo is maintained.

It hasn't been confirmed, but their wording made it seem like they were avoiding the question. I suspect we'll have it clarified sometime tomorrow whether or not PS+ is necessary for multiplayer. Sooner if it's not. If we don't hear anything by the end of the week, I'd say it's a given.

Never had any stability problems with PSN. Then again I don't live in buttfuck Australia.

    EDIT-

The wording was something along the lines of "with plus you get this this and this and also access to all of our multiplayer services. With regular PSN users can still utilize all of our network functions and enjoy their single player games uninterrupted".

It didn't say "you have to have PS+ to play online" but it didn't say "PSN will have free online play". It could just be lousy wording or something, but it may be hinting that they're going with tiered online the way Microsoft did.
