    Default When computers Kill

Shawnee teen electrocuted while working on computer
    http://www.kctv5.com/story/19767067/...trocuted-while

So here's the deal: A kid playing with his family's computer in the same room that he was found dead has now been said to have died from brutal electrocution. Apparently he had been attempting a repair on the Power Supply. I can agree that any capacitor can hold a voltage for some time after it has been charged, but any cap in a circuit will discharge itself after unplugged. This computer as cops have said, was unplugged.

Now the only basis the authorities go on is that the child had a burn mark on his body which was said to be an electrical burn. Anyone who fiddles with electronics as I do can have several electrical burns at any one time. The article drifts from the subject of the boy to warnings about electrical equipment. "Do not open PSU's, TV's or Microwaves."

They urge everyone not to strip an old computer to build a new one.
Because recycling is for pussies and everyone can afford new parts.

    My favorite statement was this:
"Why tear into it to replace it for $20? You're taking your life into your own hands,"
    Now that is truly funny.
My girlfriend's shitty Dell Optiplex has a more expensive PSU than that. The funniest part though is the video. When the lady describes what not to touch, she lifts up a Corsair 650W PSU. These run at $100, not 20.

Any task is taken with a risk, some more than others. I would think that he understood it. What do you all think?

.....Excuse me if I'm mistaken, but shouldn't you be wearing gloves or something while doing this to prevent being electrocuted?\
Seems to me that he was ignoring some basic safety stuff. I feel sorry for his family tho.

    Stupid people are stupid
I've never got any serious shocks from electrical equipment (computers, tv's and the like), or mains power for that matter.
Caps can sometimes still hold a small buzz for a little while after being disconnected from mains. But I dunno about enough to kill

What is enough to kill? the time of discharge is milli- if not micro- seconds. Any charge is going to scare you at most.

So you don't need special gloves or anything?
    Awesome.

What about crt tv's, do I need gloves for those?

You just don't do it while it's plugged in. Unplug it, then hold down the power button for a few seconds, and it'll discharge most of the electricity lingering in the system. Anything left would, as Jazz has said, scare you at worst. It'd be a lot less than your average taser.

You really can't always wear gloves while working on stuff like this anyway, since a lot of the components require a lot more dexterity than you'll get with thick rubber gloves, and thin ones will tear on any of the many sharp edges inside a computer case. But that's all irrelevant, because you don't go tinkering with it while it's plugged in.

i get the feeling they were trying to promote computer/electronics safety more than reporting the kids death (did they even care he died?). i mean they mentioned him in the video for a few seconds and the rest was a electronics warning.

also did they try stacking more than one video on top of each other on the linked page? because i clicked play then pause to let it finish loading and when i hit play again the audio had that and a commercial overlapping.

Thats what I thought too. Im just surprised Apple didn't chime in: "Why die when our computers have no field replaceable units!? "

A software engineer at Tata Consultancy Services was found dead in his apartment in Velachery, India late last Friday.

The engineer, Vijayakumar, was living in the apartment with two other roommates, Vignesh and Ram Prasad. The latter of the two was home during the accident, but was in another room at the time.

Vijayakumar’s body was found charred in a suspected computer blast, according to Police. “We are yet to ascertain the cause of the blast. The computer was completely damaged and the deceased was charred,” stated an official. “Ram Prasad had gone to take bath. He told us that suddenly he heard a blast and when he rushed out he saw the charred body of his friend and fainted. It sounds quite unbelievable. We have not heard of such a case before. But the scene of the accident seems to suggest that the youth was killed in an accident as his body was in the sitting position in front of the burnt computer.”

It sounds like it was plugged. I seriously doubt that a cap can hold enough of a charge to kill someone. This is their scientific analyse: "So uh is it unplugged?", "Yeah." "Is it possible that it was plugged and he somehow pulled the plug?", "Yeah but let's go for the more unrealistic scenario."

Don't people convulse when they are being electrocuted? Or am I more insane than originally thought?

I actually saw a guy get electrocuted by a faulty wall switch once.
He was turning off an old washing machine, touching a water pipe on the wall at the same time and there was water all over the floor.
    He survived.
But I nearly pissed myself laughing while it was happening

    Yup.

I want to tell the people who want you to not strip-down old PCs to fuck off or something of the like, that's not something ANYONE with ANY sense does.

    Ummmm, wait..........
