    I've got an old school set of headphones which are great because they have easy access to the connections so its very easy to replace broken wires.

    you could mod them, replace the Speaker's, add some form of volume control to the head set.

    I can't imagine changing anything. Speakers work as well as any 8 OHM speaker and they already have a pot for volume.
    I could paint them I guess.

    Actually, now that I think about it...I just made a small mixer that I could potentially fit inside of them. By doing so, I would add a 4 channel audio input to mix them together.
