Default Check box half and full

I hate to ask this but, what is the difference between checking a box "half" and "full"? does a checkmark mean checked "full" or does the box filled in with a blue block inside of it mean checked "full"? An example would be in video plugin settings, checking filtering at half or full, or HW configuration Wild Arms at half or full.

Edit: I have done a search for this so I'm not being lazy and wanting someone else to do the work for me. Please don't think this is another case of someone not being able to RTFM (F being fine) because I did attempt a search and I spent about a half hour looking through threads that came up with the keywords. I also tried googling. I came up dry! I appreciate anyone that can help me, so I know better what i'm doing for some specific game fixes.

In Windows, check is all and square is some. To test this:

Make a folder. Then enter that folder.
Right click, w t to make a new text document. Don't need to open it.
Right click the text document, Properties, check the box next to Hidden. Note the check here showing that this file is hidden. Click apply at the bottom and close the window.
Exit the folder. Right click the folder, then Properties. Now the box next to Hidden should have a square, meaning that the folder and all contents are not hidden, only some.

You may need to do a few more steps if you can't see the hidden text file.

While in the folder window, press Alt, then T, then O. Folder Options should open.
There should be 3 tabs at the top. Click the second tab "View".
Click the bubble where it says Show hidden files, folders, and drives. Apply, but don't close since you should probably change this setting back.

Oh I float. If there's a Windows solution to some problem, I probably know it.
