Speaking as a retired mechanic, what turns your oil light on and off is oil pressure. Intermittent on and off may indicate low oil but can also mean weak pump, sump blockage, whatever that doesn't keep the oil pressure constant.

The light doesn't give you oil pressure readings, get a gauge instead. They're called idiot lights for a reason. It only take 5 lbs to turn it off. You need at least 20 lbs at idle.
