Just got back from GameStop and got the last Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate 3DS, so glad I went there when I did.

Yeah I really learned to conserved my ammo and only stealth kill if I can. Especially because some of the boss fights will really suck down the already scarce ammo. It's definitely a good thing to up the critical chance on your handgun as soon as possible as well. That can help conserve ammo too since you'll have a higher chance of splattering their heads in a single shot. Also when it comes to burning corpses I've found that the corpses of enemies you kill don't usually come back to life. It's usually the corpse that you come up on that are just laying there that you'll want to burn. You can also be cheesy and use the corpse rag-doll physics to push the corpses together so it only takes one match to burn them all.
