Motivation, costs, etc. I find it difficult to decide and even if I did, there's no guarantee I would be able to change my course. Maybe I should contact one of my tutors in uni and ask for info/advice before the next semester begins. I just hope he answers.

I don't know much about PhD in games. The only thing I know about them is from this interesting article I read a while back.
Not to pour doom and gloom onto things but the trouble with game development degrees is they're all fairly new and there's no guarantee they're actually teaching you what you need to know. They may be better over here but I know most of the US ones have a very poor reputation even in the industry. It's also worth mentioning that the vast majority of people the larger companies employ tend to have more general degrees such as computer science or graphic design along with experience working in other fields.

If you're unsure about sticking with it, the best thing to do is find out how long the university has been teaching game development and what previous graduates have gone on to do afterwards.

Jazz, those are great advice. I had no idea about the drop/add period. And as a former modder I can assure you I understand the importance of self study and personal projects pretty well. I have to get a degree one way or another, so I'll just have to choose one, either way I'll try to focus on my own projects as well.
