Interesting. I just watched it and it seemed fine to me? Though I haven't read the manga (yet). But eh, better ending than death note.

Well for one the kid (Raki?) never reunites with Claire. Actually he continues living with the two baddies (Priscilla, Easley) who are his mentors so to speak. There's a long timeskip and he even grows up to be a badass warrior with a massive sword not entirely unlike Guts from Berserk. Basically the anime ending even killed off characters that weren't supposed to die in the manga storyline, afaik... so yeah, that's why you'll never see a sequel to the anime. They never meant there to be a sequel, which is why they changed the storyline so drastically.

Gaaaahhhh, don't spoil me! Gonna read the manga later on. I don't know the differences, but the anime ending had the kind of "adventure continues" feel to it. Death Note ending:

Had light's "recruit" person who was introduces as a clockwork worker (and that was the reason light chose him in the first place) make a really stupid mistake which was 100% out of character, and that ruined the whole show for me. It was really anticlimatic and it sorta allowed the writer to dodge the whole ethics question raised by the series (which was the main attraction for me)

It's so fucking stupid. I made it like two episodes in because the main character wants to be evil, but he's so fucking awkward and weak and incompetent that it just doesn't work no matter what he does. It's fucking uncomfortable to watch.

Yeah that's pretty much the whole point of it. He's an awkward shit head teenager and he knows it, but he wants to be a special snowflake and is so frustrated he's not he begins to hate everything. He literally just decides to do this one day. He’s fully aware the whole thing is bullshit and he’s not evil in any sense of the word, but it’s easier to pretend that than admit he’s actually a hundred times more bland and insignificant than the people he views as beneath him.

It stays uncomfortable throughout but it's actually a really good series once it gets going.
