Transfering Images From your TV to your Computer

I don't know what the technical term for that is, so sorry for the long subject title. I've been looking for something that would allow you to take the images off of your television and place them on your computer. I've heard of it before, and I know a couple people who use it. It'd just be so much easier than running through a ROM image, that and more legit.

Thanks to anyone who can help (or decipher my writing. I know I'm not being very informative, but I can't think of any other way to explain it.).
