Default Something that has been on my mind for a few days now

Our society, we can go out drinking and be shit faced drunk and the only thing that people will say is call a taxi. You can be so into sports that you yell at anyone who says your team sucks, you can love to sit down and watch house or whatever crime scene show is on or a soap. But when it comes to video games and anime then people start looking at you wierd and say those things are for children. Really? So I can go out, drink and smash mailboxes but when it comes to games then thats when people say that its immature????

    1) Shit-faced/drinking -- either "call a taxi" or "you're an alcoholic, seek help."
    2) So into sports that you yell at people who say your team sucks -- those people are called "douchebags," and are not representative of sports fans. Both of those people are. "Your team sucks" doesn't mean anything. "Your team has been playing like shit the last seven years" actually means something. (Trust me, I'm an Oilers fan). "Your team has been playing like shit the last century" also works. (Lol Cubs fans)
    3) Watching TV -- comparable to watching anime, no worries
    4) Video games/anime is for children -- This is something I keep hearing being complained about, but I've never personally encountered.
    5) Drink and smash mailboxes -- no, those people are still douches and are committing a crime.

You're using extreme examples and comparing it to someone's personal form of entertainment, and saying "why is this right? Fucking losers don't know how awesome I am."

I'll make this really short: people who only talk about one thing and one thing only are the annoying ones. If all you talk about is one thing -- sports, television, video games, anime, etc -- then you need to broaden your horizons. If you think anime is the greatest form of entertainment on the planet and everything else is inferior (a sentiment that has been expressed to me, on this site, within the last two weeks), then you're an idiot. There's a time for everything and there's a place for everything.

Now Garren, since you seem to be all about "let people like what you like," does that explain why I have negative rep that says "sports games are shit and anyone who plays them is a fucking idiot" (paraphrased) on my profile? You're just as intolerant as everyone that you're listing (except the person watching TV, I see nothing wrong there ), and perhaps this sentiment is being expressed to you not because of your hobbies, but because of your attitude.

Also, someone tell Sushihair that no one gives a shit.

I love it when someone gives a nice thought out response to the OP, and then some random person just gives a two-liner and acts superior

I was subject to it when I was very young, but that was back when videogames had really only just started to become a really big thing and not many people played them, and when anime was still virtually unknown in Britain. These days pretty much everyone seems to either play or have played games, and anime is something that most people in the western world have a passing familiarity with thanks to companies like Ghibli. Can't say I've ever experienced stigma for those sorts of hobbies in recent years. I guess maybe in smaller towns? *shrugs*

Anyway, kind of agree with Drageuth here in that the problem is less one of specific hobbies, and more one of excess. If you really enjoy videogames and like talking about them from time to time, that's fine. If it gets to the point where they dominate every aspect of your life and talking about videogames is literally the only way that you know how to socialise, that's a problem. If you really enjoy the odd drink, or having a wild night out from time to time, that's fine. If you don't know how to socialise without being completely wasted, and spend all of your free time "smashing mailboxes" as you put it, that's a problem. To me, it's that level of excess that's the immature thing, not the specific interests in question.

I've dealt with this my whole life;it has gotten to the point where I'm reluctant to talk about anime/games with people I don't know. I get tired of the snickering, and the assumption that I'm immature or stupid. The way I see it, is that I've learned a lot of things from games/anime that has enriched my life. On the other hand,I think people who don't play games think that games are a mindless distraction from real life. They probably also assume that anime is the same as children's cartoons. And they're wrong, but I think that's the problem when people dismiss things and assume without knowledge of what they entail.

I'm with Error on this, I've encountered it several times. It's basically the reason why I find it very hard to open up to new people, considering my main hobby is gaming, and it's something I'm reluctant to confess, even now.

If you're not actually going to read the replies you get can we all just vote on which thread you make next? People have wanted "Peanut butter: how does it work?" for quite some time now but I think you should know there's an equally patient audience for "Why are these geese attacking me?" and "I put my finger in my bellybutton and licked it and now I feel funny."
