Most of the time I'll get a standard version on release, then trade it immediately and if I like it I'll grab the better version down the track.
With some stuff (like some Bethesda games and both Borderlands) I just keep the standard version and use DRM free dlc when it gets dumped.

I basically agree with everything you said, although I got rid of Dragons Dogma to pick up the new edition but that was months ago and I still haven't replaced it.
