    Default Gaming Genre's: Modern Snobbery

I've always hated modern FP shooters.

I can remember playing Black on the ps2, I remember how good its visuals were, and how bored I was. From that point on I seemed to just avoid playing them. This continued the entire way through The call of Duty series until eventually I bought a ps3 which happened to be bundled with Modern Warfare 2, a game I had no interest in but I did take the time to play through the story (which gave me no greater joy than Black did all those years ago)

However, about a year ago I moved in with some friends, all of which represented some part of the gamer demographic. A lot of you already know the types of games I play, but to sum up I like to think I do play a wide variety of genre's, from racers to JRPG's.

Now the point of this thread is coming. One of the guys who moved in owns a ps3, but almost exclusively uses it for Black ops 2. We all tend to hangout together and we alternate rooms, with the game being played coming down to the room owners preference. This often leads to playing Black ops 2 when we're in said friends room.

At first it didn't interest me at all, but as I improved I began to enjoy myself, I felt a feeling of danger I never felt playing other games, that terrified feeling in your chest. However, I continued to only play it when we were hanging out in his room, months have passed, and this morning I went into his room and played it for 2 hours by myself. Something I'm almost ashamed to admit, but it did make me wonder if maybe I have been passing up on some games all these years that it turns out I really would enjoy. Not speaking only of shooters but also games like Baldur's Gate, which has been recommended to me countless times, and I know a lot of you who would turn down games based on their Genre without even taking a second to think about it (Dan)

What I'm basically getting at is maybe we all need to take a look at ourselves as gamers, and pray we never end up in my situation now, play Call of Duty for enjoyment. Thank you and goodnight.

Well, there have been many modern games that I would have very likely enjoyed but I can't for those reasons:

    1. I can't afford to overhaul my PC every 2 years, which I would have to do to keep up with the requirements of the newest "cutting edge" and "next-gen" games. Maybe I could collect the money if I really tried but I refuse to do it because it's ridiculous. The same goes to consoles. Used to be you bought a console and were set for long years. Now a couple of years and a new console comes out and people immediately forget about the old one. I refuse to be a part of commercial madness.

    2. DLC and such - Let's face it: most of the time it's a feature that the developers leave out of the base game deliberately or something that's unnecessary but it sure will make you buy it effectively making you pay for the game twice. Used to be you paid once and you got the whole game. Again, I refuse to be a part of this commercial madness.

    3. Graphics are everything these days - games are getting shorter and shorter, the gameplay, in many cases, is getting worse as well, but hell, look at the graphics! Why would you need to enjoy good gameplay, good storyline, or good controls when you can feed your eyes with render-like goodness, right? No! At least not for me.

So yeah, basically I'm passing on most of new games because the commercialism has gone too far for my taste. Then again, not all new games are infected with this disease. I enjoy indie games such as Minecraft, Kerbal Space Program or Starmade. Those are all new games (or at least not that old and still up-to-date). I can run them no problem with my aging PC and I really appreciate the true passion that went into making them.

All in all, I feel like finding good new games is like finding cherries in a pile of dudu but yeah, it's still worth it.

While I cant speak for everyone, my ps3 will definitely not be getting the boot once the ps4 arrives, I still have a huge catalog of great games both physical and digital to get through, so Bot consoles will get quite a bit of use. I can understand as a PC gamer though that its insane to keep your device up to date all the time.

DLC can go either way, sadly however it does go the way that you're talking about a lot. I cant remember what member it was that said it but someone told me they never buy a piece of dlc and still for the most part do get the full experience for the games. Plus some companies such as EA (shock horror) are now going back on some of the more inhibiting dlc like online passes

While graphics are taking a front seat on a lot of games these days, they definitely aren't everything, Look at the commercial success of Gaucameelee.

Anyway, I wasn't only talking about new games, if anything I should have focused on older games, as there is an ass load of games from when I was younger that I wouldn't play due to being a child, I should really go back. This is the site to go and do that after all.

Well, in that case I gotta say: I know the feel, bro.

There are loads of games I didn't play back in the day mainly because there was no way for me to get them. I'm trying to make up for it now.

Black is all about the graphics. I got pretty addicted to playing it years ago, even more than Far Cry.
    On Xbox of course

I wouldn't say I generally hate modern shooters, but I don't really like the MW or BO series.
Might be because I'm not into MP, but I also find it slightly disturbing that a WW2 shooter series that I always enjoyed had these games added to it. A kind of snobbery I guess
    Same with MoH.

Many years ago I was really into automotive racing games, but more recently I've grown bored of them.

While most modern racing games bore the tits off me, I was still hooked to the remake of hot pursuit even after the platinum.

I could never get into NFS games, and probably never will now.

The only racing games that ever held my interest were Mario Kart
And that's mainly because I like screwing people over.

But on topic for the thread, I dislike basically all fighting games. I never could get into them when I was younger, and it always seemed like there was some unstoppable combo that I would just get caught in and lose every time. Only fighting game series I ever enjoyed are the Super Smash Bros. (rematch sometime Sword ) mainly because I like not having health. Don't know how many times I've gotten to like 100%+ damage on those games and stay alive for another few minutes because I can make it back on the stage/fight where it is hard to get someone off (bottom part of Hyrule I'm thinking of you

I enjoyed the middle era like the undergrounds and up to carbon.

I don't mind the odd Call of Duty but they seem to trod out the same game over and over and just change the setting.

    What's the topic again?

The only time I played Mario Kart was when I was really drunk and stoned years ago, usually at a friends place after a night out at the pub

    Never liked fighting games myself.

The last time I played Mario Kart was Saturday
It is so fun, playing the Double Dash (the GC version) and I go 7/7 in getting first place. My bro goes 7/7 in getting second. On one track he holds a blue shell for three laps, uses it on the last lap with like 15 secs to go, I dodge it, and he goes into a fit of rage about how the hell did I dodge a blue shell. I'm that awesome

Even though I mostly play RPGs I still enjoy a shooter from time to time, like Crysis or Dead Space 2 and the like. In fact I generally end up enjoying them a lot. I mean, if that was the question of this thread. I'm not entirely sure. But yeah even though it's not the main genre I'm interested in it's still good for a distraction between RPG sessions, or something like that. They aren't bad games or anything. Well, some are, but there are shitty RPGs out there as well so yeah. Racing games I generally can't get into but from time to time I give them a chance. Sonic Racing Super Duper Transformed Deluxe or whatever it's called is actually really fun.

Also lawl at the PC upgrading discussion. Does it always have to be me that points this out? No you don't have to upgrade your shit every 2 years. It's more like 4-5 years.

Hey I still have fun with an 8 year old laptop

Oh got one: I've always been snobby towards rockband type games. Either get a simon says machine or learn to play for real (Waits for arguments from some of you who do both......or all 3 )

    Also sports games cuz snooze.
