VBA Controls Not Working

So I've used VBA before many times. I downloaded it onto my computer today and I tried to play pokemon Silver. The controls wouldn't work on my keyboard, I tried changing the controls to try and see if it would help but I couldn't edit the joypad either. Please help, I'd play on my SP but it doesn't charge.

EDIT: I have tried different versions of the game. I have tried different versions of VBA.

Have you tried different games first and setting the controls up before you start a rom?

Have you tried deleting the vba.ini then trying again to set up controls?

Have you tried re installing the vba emulator or deleting your cache? You can always try an alternate emulator if you're really determined to play those games.
