It can come as no surprise.

Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. Greatest evil genius of all time, with possibly the greatest moustache of all time. He's also brilliant for having consistently good voice acting on balance, and a great style in the games especially (see, for example, the two most recent games, Sonic Colours and Generations).

    A well-crafted, believable storyline.

I'm fond of games all over the place, often including those with a simple or barely existant storyline (see Sonic or Mario games, let's be serious here), but the games that have truly well-crafted histories and stories are the ones that grip me by far the most. BioShock is a stellar example of such. In fact, I wanted to show Grady a bit of it and he stopped me from going on because, and I quote, 'DON'T SPOILER IT!'.

The concept there is exceptionally well done - taking real world philosophies and concepts and creating a fantastic world with them in which to tell the story through a game.

    ---

I just realised I may be misinterpreting the term 'concept' here, but I don't have any particular favourites there. I do have a few that I can't stand because they're usually executed very poorly. Time travel, which only works if you don't take it too seriously, or if you do it VERY well indeed (Chrono Trigger). Then there's the good old "You wake up somewhere with no recollection of who you are/how you got there" amnesia chestnut which, by this point, is becoming remarkably irritating because EVERYONE must be amnesiac if this sort of stuff is to be believed. Shadow the Hedgehog is a particularly foul example of this. You'd think after losing and regaining his bloody memories the second time he'd think to write a bloody DIARY or something. "Note to self; May forget this, should probably write this down."

Most concepts, if executed well, are engaging. So I suppose my point of view, wordily expressed as ever, is that the concepts by themselves are rarely engaging, it's their execution that makes them so.

The basic concept of the Sonic games also shows that. The better Sonic games, that is. To wit: "Robotnik bad, Robotnik want world, Robotnik try to take over world, Sonic stop Robotnik". Done. All you need now is the execution of this concept in as engaging a manner possible. The older Sonic games went for high quality gameplay, polished levels, and so on. Then came the over-story'd idiocy games that were epitomised by the horror of Sonic 2006, and they realised after that (slowly) that reducing that kind of insanity would be a better way to go. Thankfully. Thus, the concept stayed the same, but the execution of it changed significantly.

Ghaleon/Magic Emperor. As well crafted a villain as I've seen, and the second game really helps too. Plus he just looks so evil.

    Question of the Day 15/11/2012

What generation of consoles would you, if you could, update with modern graphics or would you rather not and just let the past be the past?

I'd rather not, because if any of them really used modern graphics, it'd mean they be more brown and less colorful.

Must it be a whole generation? If so, then the generation that the N64 was in.
A lot of the games from those consoled were in 3d by then and It would be cool to see the system and games with updated graphics.
Games like Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot and Soul Calibur 1 would be looking pretty good.
But NOTHING more! Seeing what they did to some remakes/re-releases of some games, I'd rather they not mess with the rest of the games. Only the graphics :3

I'm inclined to say 'let bygones be bygones'.

Some games have gotten exceptional remakes, but in many cases, they were just horrendously poorly done ports of the originals, usually with more issues than before. So there are individual remakes I can live with, but updating an entire generation? Can only end badly, I think.
