There was another one I watched around that time too, but I can't remember the name of it. Something to do with Gears like in Xenogears, and the main characters name was Slade. Anyone know the name of it?
    It might be tekkaman blade

First thing that comes to mind was Dragon Ball. First time I think I even came across anime was on Toonami way back in the early days before I knew what anime was

The words 'toonami' coupled with 'way back in the day' gave me a chuckle...ha....those good 'ol 1990s, ANCIENT times, eh?

I can't exactly remember the first Anime I ever watched, but the first I can remember is a movie called Princess Mononoke. I also remember watching some episodes of DragonBall a long time ago.

It is "way back when" when 20 years is 100% of your life.

This is true. I remember becoming aware of Toonami at some point in the 90s, via my ex-wife's younger brother. I used to record ThunderCats and DBZ on VHS whenever I was able to catch them. I dunno if it was just a local NY thing, but the shows had bumper animation that showed a little 'SD' robot/pilot wandering around and operating the controls of a large ship.

Although I dont care for 90% of the animation coming out of Japan, feeling that its all become WAY too oversaturated and re-re-rehashed, I still buy every DVD/set I find in the wild.
(Grabbed two sets/seasons of Robotech Macross yesterday, among other things....)

I do enjoy SOME of the 'modern' stuff, though - The one with the bloated radish spirit and the little girl is really fantastic, I have always loved 'Please Save My Earth!', and my DBZ sets number in the dozens.

He is the "host" of Toonami. Kinda like Conan or Steven Colbert.
He received several makeovers throughout the years of Toonami and even a little back story oddly enough. They did bring him back AFAIK for the new Toonami.
