Default How Video Games are judged today.

I was over at a friend's when another one of my friends were over. We were arguing about Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil 1 about how bad the graphics are. I was saying games should never be judged on graphics and should focus on other parts like the plot, game play, and controls. Meanwhile, he's arguing about the graphics being "Crappy". Seriously, I'm sick of this and fan boys saying things like the argument of PS3 vs. Xbox 360 vs. Wii vs. PC. No console is good or THE best, all of the consoles have pros and cons but, what's the point of arguing about this I just wanted to get this off my chest.

    Same story different time.

We have all heard this argument nothing new about it.

I think games can be judged with graphics, but only as a small part of judging the game. Because the look is a small part of the game, but it is still something to think about. I would not just no buy a game because it looks ugly, but if it looks bad enough compaired to other games of the same era, then it is a hint of how much production value or lack there of for the game. So if someone tried to release a current gen game with PS1 visuals, then I might start to worder how much effort was put into the game in question (well unless that was intentional for an artistic reason, but I don't know anyone who would do that)

Yeah, I agree with you on how you can judge with it's graphics a little bit and with it's programming compared with others within it's own era. Meanwhile in my story, my friends were comparing the two PSX (PS1) games with PS3 games which led to this thread.

    Little suggestion: Get smarter friends.

More on-topic, obviously games made like... 10 years ago, will not look as good as games released this year on current gen consoles.

But since when: Good graphics = Good game/Better game? (there are honestly enough examples where for example older games within a same series are still considered much better than their Sequels which have better graphics)

Maybe you should consider to stop wasting your time arguing and just tell your friends to actually not just look at them, but instead play the games (which I assume they didn't )

Call of Duty is the perfect example.

Exactly, I just stopped arguing with them because they only stick with current games unlike one of my friends (not one of the friends in this subject) and I play these games for the fun not the best graphics like I still play NES and others yet I play today's games because video games are made for entertainment not for the companies to go to a competition who can make games with the best graphics like Call of Duty and Battlefield.

Not even, No one will play a super shitty game. Even if its a NES game. Programming matters a lot.

To OP: Progamming doesn't just concern Graphics, but as well general gameplay and stability (in fact, the game as a whole)... Funny enough, game can have great graphics, but be so badly programmed that it needs patches since day 1, due to it being bug-ridden and prone to crash... ( companies releasing unfinished PC games, sigh)

Yet Commercialism will strike, suckering in consumers thinking it's good yet they're in for a surprise. Also, I agree with Kuro programming is really huge for gaming.

Exactly, I don't see how he says programming doesn't matter. The game wouldn't exist without programming!

You said something very close to it, and edited it to make it closer to what you think. But i replied to the original Statement.

Who can do the ebst programming has nothing to do with graphics. It has to do with little bugs and fluid gameplay. Graphics have fairly little to do with programming as in most cases you can get any 3d artist to make the models and any programmer whom has his diploma can make the Graphics work in the game.

Yeah, Thanks for pointing it out. Really appreciated. I thought bugs were fixed in patches and what about controls?

Controls are a part of fluid gameplay, If you have stiff controls your gameplay won't be 100% fluid.
