Default Need Opinions on Best Media to use for PS1 and PS2 backups

    Hi all,

Just registered here, long time lurker and I was wondering what you all use for the PS1 and PS2 backups (primarily on the PS2 console) I have heard of Tayko Yuiden and Verbatim being of good quality.

What I am interested in knowing is are there any other types such as Sony (because the console is made by Sony) and where they can be obtained... I would prefer retail stores so I know that they are the real deal.

I would also like to know the type of media recommended and the specific type of brand such as Verbatim Datalife Plus, etc. I have also heard that Memorex media is of lesser quality (if so I need to redo my collection of 80 some disks). The price of the spindles would also be helpful.

If this info is needed the console I have is a PS2 Version 7 SCPH 39001 modified with Modbo 4.0 Modchip firmware version 1.99

    Thank you all in advance,
    HaloSlayer255

I buy from them all the time, they are legit. You can get a 100 disc spindle for around $20 - $30, depending on the brand.

FMCB is pretty useful, you should consider installing it to a memory card.

His console has a Modbo 4.0......which probably has Matrix Infinity firmware (which should play dual layer discs without pre-patching).
If he's only playing game backups I think he should be right with what he has already

    Yeah, Verbatims are good.

Although I have used plenty of Ritek/Memorex discs for PS2, Xbox (original) and even Wii games with no major problems.
Couple of coasters every hundred or so (but they're decent enough for the price imho).......and the discs are still working fine after a few years.
I have image backups on HDD as well, just in case any discs fail at some stage (but it's usually when kids have abused discs that I need to run off another copy).

Definitely stay away from any media made in India, no matter what the brand

Nothing to add to the thread, but I've moved the thread to a more relevant section.

Thank you all for the quick reply everyone with the advice that you had given me I might stay with Memorex for now and if the laser dies then I know what killed it. Right now I am trying to repair the laser for the model 7 PS2 SCPH 39001 and I have a replacement on ebay coming soon; but I figure if I can fix the original to have a redundant part the better the odds in case one of them dies in say 5-7 years.

    Thank you all,

It's not difficult to work out if they're from India.

Like I said, no patching required

Hi everyone, thank you for all of the suggestions.

However I still need to test the laser, after I was almost finished reassembling the console I tore the ribbon connector from the dvd drive laser unit. Does anyone know if I can use copper tape (I think that's what it is called) to repair the connections? I might see if I can take a pic of it and upload soon.

    Thank you,
    HaloSlayer255

P.S. I don't know if I need to use patches for the PS1 anti-mod games on a version 7 PS2 unit... It is SCPH 39001, If I do need to use patches could someone give me a tutorial or refer me to a thread with a tutorial? Thank you in advance, and I hope asking how to patch PS1 games is legal in the forums

    Thanks again, HaloSlayer255
