Most popular doesn't usually equal quality from where I am. I'm partly to blame as I don't keep up with mainstream artists and if I were to imagine what teenagers nowadays mostly listen to, it'd probably be Justin Bieber or some low quality rap. Were things this different in the 90's?

In the early 90's music was pretty good. It had some variety. For awhile grunge dominated but it was good. It went downhill as soon as the bubblegum pop crap started. That crap is what led to the state of music today. So yes.
