Gotta agree with most of the people before me. Unskippable cutscenes should not exist, period. I would say if you have to make a cutscene unskippable, only do so for the very first viewing. Then, any viewing after that should be totally skippable. I don't know how many times I saw the end cutscene for God of War: Chains of Olympus, but it must have been damn close to fifty times. I was more frustrated with the cutscene than I was with the actual battle.

I'm also going to agree with Gare right above me and say grinding. One of the main reasons I don't play more JRPGs is they almost always feature grinding in some form, which bores the shit out of me and almost instantly makes me lose interest in the game (unless for platinum purposes, apparently).

Also, fetch quests. Some of them have been done right, but a lot of them feel like the trading game in Ocarina of Time. Get an object, give it to someone, who gives you an object to give to someone else, all so you can get one item that you will use one time for ten minutes, and then promptly ignore for the rest of your game. This always feels like a means to pad the game time, and I hate them all the time.

And finally, escort missions. Or "follow the leader" missions. Now, my main gripe here isn't the fact that they exist, just the fact that whenever you're following/escorting someone, they always move so freaking slow. If I'm allowed to run at Mach 4, then everyone else in the game that I should have to follow should run at the same speed. I hate running, then stopping to wait for them to catch up, then running for a little bit, then stopping again. Even the walking animation usually goes faster than the pace that the NPC moves at, and again, it just annoys me.

Now, none of those are "because they are too freaking hard." I think with the sole exception of Battletoads, I've never actually given up on a game due to difficulty. I usually give up out of boredom. Usually from one of the above.

I think 99% of gamers worldwide would consider unskippable cutscenes that you have to watch over and over again becuase you suck at the game

as for me, i suck at every game possible so really, this dumb, annoying pointless thing always happens to me. unfortunately

at least for some games they make it possible to skip cutscenes if you've already seen it once, but its not that common you see that in games. Also really annoying bosses in RPG games that require you to grind and grind and grind for constant levels for hours and hours and days apon days until you reach the perfect character skills and magics and whatnot to beat the boss in like, one hit. Those types of things tend to have me cheat the game so i dont have to grind.

once again, i suck at video games

Agree. But many times in game you can see leaks on walls/glass and stuff and still no flooded levels that would allow you to dive or at least swim.

Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass. Having to constantly return to that f*cking tower over and over again, with the guards, and the getting caught....gaaaarrrghhh RAGE.

Somewhat related to grinding - repetition. Remember that part where you have to close like a dozen Oblivion gates in TES4? Yeah, the guy who designed that should be fired.

Unskippable cutscenes. The opening of Mass Effect 2 comes to mind, which you have to play through every time you start a new character. Kind of a dick move from Bioware. Or just plain laziness. There's also the "die to a boss, listen to his pre-battle speech again and again" thing that plagues JRPGs. Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut on the PS2 (and possibly other games as well) was kind enough to eliminate this and give an instant retry option after you die.

That part in Kingdom Hearts where you have to pilot that spaceship to get from A to B. Again, I felt like the game was wasting my time.

Certain parts of Xenogears. I just wanted to get on with the plot and not have to do a dungeon with an insanely high encounter rate.
The last four EA games I've played had unskippable cutscenes, really killed the replay value. I don't think I've played a balanced JRPG in years, if ever (might be remembering some wrong).
'Balanced' being that I can play the game to completion with minimal to no grinding.

Yeah, there is no excuse for unskippable cutscenes. And yeah Drag, exactly, the game can at the very least detect save data and use a new game plus system to make them skippable after the first time.

As far as grinding goes...it's really obnoxious when a game forces it on you. Stuff like Mugen no Frontier despite the fact that I enjoyed it was rather annoying. Of course in some games you can use strategy, clever skill/item combinations and such to defeat challenging bosses but the answer for most people is grinding.

Yeah, this falls under the category of thrown in game-play. You might as well make something like that a cutscene.

How else could companies make superfluous game time claims on the package? Those days seem to be over for the most part but it's not like I look at random game cases to know either.

This made me think of Shenmue.

Pokemon puzzles! Navigating yourself through harsh road and forest (plus many random encounter) making me sick! Sometime, can be really tough!

Um I don't know if this counts or if you knew this but you can go underwater in Bioshock 2.

Also, yeah, I'd say escort missions are the biggest pain. Exceptions to this: Ico and RE4.

Hmm... F-Zero GX on the Gamecube made me really angry when I was playing all of the missions on Very Hard mode.

Not long after I beat them all, my memory card corrupted. I didn't just say "Okay" and leave it, though - I went back and beat them all again in one day. That felt pretty good.

Yeah, but it's more thank walking underwater than diving. You can't go back and check those areas later like in Half-Life or Unreal because they are considered as 'destroyed'.

Something is very wrong with this quote... The boss is unbeatable so you grind an obnoxious amount so you can destroy the boss in one hit? What the fuck is the point in that? Why don't you just grind for like 30min or an hour and you could probably beat the boss with a little effort. You'd also have a much more engaging experience.

    but thats the point

grinding is seriously an annoying waste of time and half the time i dont even know when to really stop to make sure i really beat the boss.

I tend to give up on a RPG when i die countless times on the same boss over and over again, AFTER GRINDING.

Forsaken Fortress 1st time on Wind Waker so freaking annoying, Eternal Engine on Hard Mode SAB2 getting A rank uggh, Rusty Bucket Bay getting the jiggy in the ship where all the fans are and notes heck getting the notes is most annoying period.
Layin down enjoying the fun unleashing the power of the sun and capturing them all until I'm done.
