it seems most of the strain is going to the cpu which causes it to over heat, and i noticed the laptop never goes above 1.5 gigs of ram (total of 4), i am wondering is there a way to make it run smoothly so most of the strain isnt on the cpu?

Most programs are designed to use as little memory as possible. RAM usage isn't going to lessen the load on the processor.
Is the processor actually overheating, or just getting hot?
Is it just getting hot or does the PC crash, and RAM has nothing to do with this. If it is just getting hot that's normal, but if it smells like burning then there is something wrong.
no it just gets hot and shuts down randomly. got a fan for it but its one of the cheap ones and it doesnt help keep the laptop cool (no different if i put it on the table it still gets so hot it will shut down). or should i just save up and get a better laptop that doesnt overheat easily?
Have you checked the BIOS? Turn off any overclocking or turbo mode for the CPU if it's on, and turn automatic fan speed on if it's off.
You might have to take out the cpu heatsink and fan and give it a good clean, laptops tend to attract alot of dust. i have to clean out mine every 3 to 4 months,if you to take it to peices remember to use a good heatsink paste when reinstalling the heatsink
Have you checked out how good or bad the thermal paste is applied? Do you use a laptop cooler?
