Default A couple questions about wires/transformers, etc.

Hey lovely people, it's me, the guy who always asks silly questions.

I found the mighty ol' titan, my SEGA Genesis last week!
I then remembered that some years ago the transformer proved not to be as resistant as the console - fell to the floor once and it got completely destroyed.

I went out and bought a generic transformer. I couldn't get the Genny to work. I've noticed a difference on voltage and amperage between it and the console, so I tried to change it for another with the same specs. I couldn't find one, but the lady offered me a different one.

    Console says: 10 V, 0.85 A
    Trans says: 9V, 0.65 mA
    Alternate trans says: 10 V, 1A

It doesn't work because of the lower voltage?
Will the slightly lower amperage harm the console in any way?
And also, is there any way to know if it's the transformer, the video out or the console itself?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

EDIT: Herp derp, edit on units. Thanks Jazz.

It's probably not working because of lower voltage, and maybe the lower amperage.
Less power is going through the console through the transformer, and at a slower rate.
But amperage that's too high might fry the console.
I would say that it's probably the transformer.

Make sure it is the same type of voltage (DC or AC) and make sure the polarity is the same on both, if voltage is DC.

Also, if the console is DC and your adapter is AC, you'll kill the console.

EDIT: One more thing, your "alt trans" has 1A which is the equivalent of 1000mA. Comparing 1000 to 0.85 is bad.
    Just set that trans aside.

Hahahaha, oh wow, that should've come across as a fairly evident typo.
I've fixed my mistake. Thanks Jazz :
    I meant 0.85 A (850 mA) versus 1 A (1000 mA).
Will it still damage the console?

I can't say for sure, but it is not that big a difference (now that you corrected your post )
Is the console still not powering on though? Have you checked the polarity yet?

When I say the transformer "proved not to be as resistant as the console - fell to the floor once and it got completely destroyed" I mean "absolutely obliterated".
Well, the casing was, anyway. I don't know if the pieces are still around, but I don't have them at hand.
    The console itself says nada.

Any way to know the polarity without it?

Polarity is Negative. (the right half of the pic I posted earlier)
Is that whats on your adapter?

Inverted on the Y axis (-)-----·)-----(+) instead of (+)-----(·-----(-) but yes, it's negative.

    Hahahaha, yes, I have Jazz
It does not, so I've come to ask you what could be wrong.

As always, i guess I should add something to my first post: I don't have the "alternate trans".
I was asking just to be sure I would not damage anything and to rule out any other possibilities before going back to the store and changing it without knowing if it is true that it doesn't work or if the A/V wire is broken, or if time has got the best of my Genny.

    Thanks for helping anyway Jazz

EDIT: The red LED does turn on, but that doesn't really tell me anything other than that the current gets to go through it. There might still not be enough power, or something.

    Oh, haha.
WHen I have used AC adapters that were not the original, I have found that less amperage usually will only power partially. Sometimes it works if you get close enough to the required amps, but usually it will just power an LED.

You might have to find a power cord on amazon or something.

Here's a photo I found of an original Genesis adapter.

Also, here's an article on choosing a replacement adapter... seems pretty easy to understand, but if you get stuck on something just ask... I'm sure Jazz knows the jargon, and I know some of it, too.
