Should I get a PS2?

Hi lovely people.
I've got a question for you. I hope you don't mind.

I've been saving quite a bit of money from my last months of work and finally I got enough for a PS3.
Wait, wait, wait, aren't these like 300 these days?
Well, yes, and no. My country's currency is devaluated 4-to-1.
1200, then?
No, still no. On average, they cost somewhere between 2000 and 2500 (160 gb. model).

So I said, well, I'll get a PS2 instead! (800) but I know little about it and I'd like to have your opinion on it on terms of hardware and games.
I like (mostly) action based games: shoot-em-ups, platformers, rhythm/music, run and gun, hack and slash, some RTS, maybe some TPS and maybe some strategy. No FPS and no turn-based RPG.

What do you say?

RTS should've never gone onto consoles, at least modern ones not meant to play on PC.
The PS2 has a good selection of every Genre. Even if they're japan only games.
So get a PS2 unless you want some people to try to get more platinums.
Some recommendations for some genres are Metal Slug ( I think that isn't Japan only.) Guitar Hero, Crash Bandicoot, Dynasty Warriors.

HUGE fan of Metal Slug and Crash. And for the GH series, yeah, they're pretty cool games. Willing to pay for plastic drums as well!

I'd definitely go for the PS2 unless you tend to get the PS3 cheaper through other means instead of buying at retail. I don't have a PS3 myself but from what I can tell the PS2 seems like it would be more up your alley since it seems you really just want to play something fun during your free time instead of doling out cash for the newest thing. As for platformers I would recommend the Jak series if you haven't played them already.

PS2 also has a large collection of games that are relatively cheap to buy.

Honestly, as stated above, with the wide variity of gaming generas and and easy access to most of the game, there really isn't a reason not to get a ps2. Aside from all that, it plays dvds/cd and with a bit of moding, can do some other cool things to.

Yes! its very much worth getting a PS2!

So many great games it will take a very very long time to get bored of the machine, and it has Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect... what more could you want

if you can get your hands on a Fat Model PS2 (made in japan) Most Definitely GET IT.

A million times yes. It's a great console with a really strong library of games. I doubt you'll regret getting one, I sure as hell didn't.

Very true. It has such a huge library of games that I would say anyone who considers them self a gamer could find at least 15 titles they like.

It's pretty much a unanimous 'yes'. It's considered to be one, if not the, most successful consoles and it has over 2000 titles available. That being said, I own 3.

Well, it seems to be unanimous.
Considering the genres I've listed and some I previously did not (shoot-em-ups, platformers, rhythm/music, racing, run and gun, adventure, hack and slash, TPS, strategy), could you recommend me some games?
I've got some I want to try already like Mega Man X8, Gitaroo Man, GH/Rock Band series, Out Run 2006, GoW 1&2, Mushihime-sama, Psyvariar, Thunder Force 6, Ratchet and Clank series, GTA... I've liked Daxter on the PSP and Spyro on PS1 so I'd like to try Jak and Daxter as well.
Personal favorites would be better than critically acclaimed ones

Blood Will Tell, Shadow of the Colossus, any Armored Core game.

If you really dig shoot em ups the Dreamcast is absolutely great for that.
