Kamen Rider still has things like that, watch Kamen Rider OOO, for example.

I just remember wondering why they didn't simply combine into Megazord right at the beginning. Like, at the first sign of trouble. You know they're going to have to do it anyway exactly five minutes from the end of each episode, may as well save some time so we can have more quality scenes featuring the comedy stylings of Bulk and Skull. Or not.

But most of all I liked how the black ranger was black, and the yellow ranger was Chinese. And the pink ranger was a girl. And the blue ranger was chronically depressed. And the red ranger was a manly red blooded male. And the green ranger was incredibly nervous around the pink ranger and ended up barfing a lot.

That last sentence may have been exaggerated slightly.
