Look, I've played Chrono Trigger for quite a bit but I also just started playing FF5.
I am currently 14 hours into Chrono Trigger but I have played FF5 for a little time.

Tell me which one I should complete first?

Chrono Trigger. That game is worth beating, what with its multiple endings.

I think you should finish Chrono Trigger, there's probably not too much longer of it left, what point are you up to?
FF5 is great, you may have to grind a bit more than you would in Chrono Trigger, but make sure to finish it.

So many endings!!! After you beat Chrono Trigger start a new game+ for even more deliciousness.
Final Fantasy 6, AKA FF3(SNES) is pretty sweet too. FF1(NES) is good, but very short.
For the original Open-Ended RPG, look for Shadowrun on the Genesis. The SNES version is fun, but way too linear and difficult. Not that you get killed all the time, but like point and click games where you may have to search through the entire game to find one item you need to advance. Kind of lame.
If you don't mind very cutesy RPGs, look for Secret of Mana on SNES. It was made for multi-tap with up to 3 players.
Final Fantasy Adventure on original Game Boy was fun, plays a lot like Legend of Zelda with level ups added.

I also recommend Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS. Those are 'classic' now, aren't they?

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.
