Default [Help!] Half Life 2 Problems

I just bought The Orange Box (hooray to Black Friday!) and everything installed fine. When I try to play HL2, it crashes at the first in-game loading screen after you talk to Barney and jump out the window. I get an "engine error" and it brings me back to the desktop.

    Here's my computer specs:
    WinXP Pro SP2
    Asus P4P800SE
    P4 3.0 ghz Prescott
    ATI Radeon X1600 with 7.10 driver (I couldn't get 7.11 to install)
    1gb Crucial RAM
    ~30gb free space

I tried running CS Source and it worked fine. I've tried cleaning the DirectX drivers and reinstalling them to 9.0c and that didn't solve the problem. I also tried looking for the 4 autosave files and changing them to read only but I don't seem to have them. Please help! Thanks

open steam, then right click on half-life 2 then properties, select the local files tab then verify integrity of game cache.

if all else fails just re-install

That, and delete the game files. Go to

    "C:\Program Files\Vavle\Steam\steamapps"

And delete "source engine.gcf," "half-life 2 content.gcf," and then go to the *account name* folder and delete the half life 2 folder.

Verified the integrity and it seems to be fine.

To uninstall, can I just "delete local content" for all of the games (including CS and DoS which seem to work fine already)? Or do I only need to get rid of the 5 that came with Orange Box?

Just the game that's giving you problems

    Still the same crash point.

I think I'll eventually just format if need be.

    See if this helps:

Did you try deleting the files manually?

I'm just going to format and re-install later today/tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'll make sure to check out your guide as well. Thanks, Panda!

Just played an hour of Half Life 2 and Team Fortress after formating so I'm not sure what the problem was. Had no trouble installing the newest Catalyst drivers as well.
