Default Could anyone with Linux on PS3 try this?

Search the web for epsxe (or around these forums wink wink)
    and install it.

IF you use the software based video plugin and no sound, can you run the epsxe emulator on the PS3 under linux (linux version of epsxe I guess)?

Could someone try this out? I know I've heard people getting Snes9x to work on the PS3, and this is only a step after that right?

In theory it would work fine but im sure Sony has anti-piracy software built into the PS3 for just such things.
Otherwise the Linux scene would be booming with apps built to run on the PS3 (including emulators)

i havn't really heard much about the Linux on PS3 deal

sony has nothing built into the ps3 to prevent that sort of thing, it's just that the ps3 graphics processor is locked out. meaning the cell does everything including the graphics aspect.

I was wondering this also. Has anybody actually run it successfully?

If they haven't, in theory, would it work?

You have to take in effect that the PS3 is using a PowerPC based processor while most Linux apps are made for an x86 processor. That in conjunction with not currently being able to use the graphics card really slows things down. I would say that once they gain full access to the graphics card, you will start to see more emulator development for PS3 Linux.

Not necessarily true, as most are open source and have ports for all flavors of processor. And really, the Cell is quite good as a graphics processor if people programmed for it, but straight PowerPC apps are what are being used, and the Cell, while similar, only shows its advantages when specifically programmed for. On the same note, the 360 is PowerPC based, in fact, more so then the Cell in the PS3, with development kits (alpha) running on modified Apple G5s. The problem with PS3 programming really lies in the memory, and how it is allocated. The Cell could do some fancy stuff...

i don't know if it's OK to post this, so i'll give it to the OP & let him run with it. AD has a huge forum on ps3 exploits (that's the word i use) & yes Yellow Dog Linux has been up & running for awhile. I believe Red Hat and/or Fedora were also working & a few people talked about trying Ubuntu.

The Cell indeed does lock out everything & basically talks to the rest of the sub-system. Sony did this to increase performance, but it also has DRM issues. Of course, Microsquash will deny all the DRM bull$**t built into Vista (aka f.u. customer OS), but it's in there.

Just a matter of time, and some exploit will be found in the PS3. Then homebrew will be wide open, emulation will be working on every system known to man.

and i can take over the world with a cell processor-based computer. hahah.

So, I take that as a no, it wouldn't work...?
