    Default Need router advice

I need a new wireless router for my apartment. One of my roommates and I both have the Linksys USB Adapter with Speedbooster. My other roommates is going to be wired. I was going to go with the corresponding Linksys router with Speedbooster but found out there's tons of different versions, seen here under WRT54GS. I have no idea what the pros and cons are to each of those different versions. Please help me decide which version to get or possibly recommend a better router altogether. Thanks in advance!

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I'll keep checking it , because I might get that same one and I want to know as well about the pro and cons or if it's any good.

yea.. its pretty much random when you actually go to buy it...

my friend bought a linksys wrt54g back in january and ended up with a version 7.0

and i bought one like 2 months ago and it was a v5.0

so yeah pretty much completely random

that said, not sure bout the wrt54gs line, but the wrt54g line i know that pre v5 has a lot of issues with retaining p2p connections for incredibly long times... and the post v5 ones dont have any 3rd party firmware available for them... yet

so thats about all i know... hope that helps

I say dump linksys! Speedbooster is just a gimmick for super-g, which is basically twice the speed of g (108Mbps) Get a good belkin or netgear that supports super-g and you'll have the same thing as "speedbooster" plus the reliability and awesomeness of belkin/netgear. Linksys is not really reliable, most people I know that own one has it crap out in a 2-3 years. In fact the one we had at the office crapped out after a little over a year of use. We then replaced it with a D-link router. D-Link is generally pretty good but I'm starting to lose faith in them

My recommendation for a specific model:

I've heard a lot of good things about Netgear so I think I'll probably go with the one that supports Super-G. Thanks.

Crap, and I was going to get the WRT54G too. =\ My dad only needs it to check his mail every once in a while, but for example Panda, if I use it to connect the PS2 and the PC wired, and only one laptop wireless, it's still a good choice?

That's like one of the cheapest routers I can find around here.

EDIT: Okay, now I'm lost...I'm not too familiar with wireless networks and stuff, so...I have my DSL modem and once the phone company gave me a Wireless Modem, from which I plugged the phoneline, and the ethernet cables to my devices and the wireless signal. It died, and now I'm back with my Wired Modem. So now I'm reading about an access point. >__>

Thing is, if I get a wireless router, can I plug it like this? DSL > Router > Stuff.

eh, it'll do the job, so go for it if your selection is pretty limited

That is one sexy wireless router

Will check out whether I can get one here in India once I get my lappy

Edit: 99% of all the people I know here use D-Link wireless routers. I was gonna make this same thread a couple of days before I get my laptop

The one I have is getting kinda old but it's still working great. I'd say they make great routers.

didnt quite understand ur post... so ur saying your ISP gave you a dsl modem with a wireless router built in... but then it didnt work so they just gave you the modem?

if thats the case then yes you can plug the modem into the router, and then into stuff

however, if the modem is assigning local ip addresses (i had this problem with a friend who had dsl and wanted a wireless router) then you have to disable DHCP on the router i believe...
