trouble with guns for SNES9x

I'm having trouble setting up the mouse to work as a zapper gun for my snes9x. I go to the configure controller screen, and try to configure the mouse for the gun, and change the input to Superscope. What am I doing wrong? Could somebody walk me through this? Sorry to be so novice.
