Section One: Getting ePSXe, BIOS & Plugins

A very common question at the Emuparadise forums is how to play PSX (PlayStation) games on PC. The most common answer is to use the emulator ePSXe, which has been considered to be the overall best PlayStation emulator for quite some time. This tutorial will show you everything you need to know in order to get started with playing PSX games on ePSXe. If you've already managed to get games running on the emulator, but ran into more specific problems, this tutorial won't help you. The official ePSXe FAQ might have useful information though. Also note that everything written down here is taken from my own brain -- it's not black-on-white facts that expert analysts have proved and presented on BBC News. No flaming.

Step I - First, you will have to download the ePSXe emulator itself. You can get it from the Official ePSXe download section. It is generally suggested to use the latest revision, which is named ePSXE 1.6.0, then try the older ePSXe 1.5.2 if you run into compatibility problems. Once you have downloaded ePSXe you will have to extract it from the compressed .zip archive it comes in. You can do this using a free program like WinRar.

Step II - After extracting ePSXe to a folder, you will see that there are several other directories inside this folder. The /bios and the /plugins folders are the only ones you need to think about right now. First of all, to play any PSX game, you will have to download a PSX bios from Emuparadise's bios section. The "11-psx-bios.zip" archive in that section is suitable for this purpose, so download that one. Once you have downloaded the bios archive, use WinRar to extract the files inside the archive into the /bios directory in the ePSXe folder. Your /bios folder should contain files similar to this once you've extracted the files from the archive into it.

Step III - We still haven't tried accessing ePSXe itself yet, but before doing so, there is one more step that we need to go through. This is related to the /plugins directory in the ePSXe folder -- we need to download graphic and sound plugins. A good place to get plugins is this website. As you can see, there are several plugins listed on that site. Plugins that are recommend downloading are the following ones (it is good to have several choices -- download as many as you want):

    - P.E.Op.S. GPU
    - Pete's GPU Plugins
    - Eternal SPU
    - P.E.Op.S. DSound

Once you have downloaded the plugins above, extract them from their archives and into the /plugins folder. As always, WinRar can be used to extract files from archives. Your /plugins folder should contain files similar to the folder on this image:

    Section Two: Configuring ePSXe

Step IV - Now we will open ePSXe itself, do double-click on the ePSXe.exe file in the ePSXe folder. You will be greeted by a config wizard screen that asks you about what bios file, and what kind of plugins you want to use. Since you have already downloaded and extracted bios and plugin files into the correct directories, you can simply select them. Good choices to begin with can be found here on this image:

Depending on what game you are playing, and what hardware your PC has, you might want to change plugins later to see if it helps solving an issue. You can do this in ePSXe by accessing Config -> Wizard Guide. After telling ePSXe what plugins to use, the wizard will ask you to configure your controller/keyboard. This is pretty straight-forward -- you just type in what buttons to play with. You can even use a real PlayStation controller if you've got an USB adapter made for that purpose . If you want to switch to another plugin, or configure resolution, framerate, or any other option, you can to this in ePSXe's Config menu.

    Section Three: Dealing with games

Now that ePSXe has been setup with plugins and bios files, it's ready to play games. You can get quite a few games at Emuparadise's PSX section, or you can search the internet for other places to download, or eventually use games you've got on CDs from earlier. What you need to know however, is that usually, when you download games from the internet, they come in split archives. The archives can not be played directly from ePSXe -- you will have to extract what is inside the archives in order to end up with a disc image. This image (usually .ISO, .IMG or .bin/.cue files) is basically the whole game, and once extracted, you can run it in ePSXe using the File -> Run ISO option. If you aren't sure how to extract split archives, read this tutorial. Note that unlike bios and plugin files, game images can be placed wherever you want to store them. If your game is a CD and not an image on your harddisk, you can play it in ePSXe using the File -> Run CDROM option.

This tutorial should be more than enough to get you started, but doesn't answer specific problems with games who don't display correctly, jumpy framerate and so on. For issues like that, make a detailed topic in the Sony Systems Emulation Forum.

    Starter Kits
In the Emulation Related section you'll find starter packs containing the emulator, the BIOS and the plugins needed to start using this emulator. Some of them even include small games, give them a try.
