Default bit of screen tearing in FFVIII

i'm using version 1.5.1 since most games i play are rpg..

my graphics card is a geforce 6800 gt ultra

512 ddr ram... i'm pretty set and my set up should handle this..

the bios i'm using is the scph10001 (i know i didn't spell that correctly)

anyways, i have a number of bios but i've been told that's a good one.

    i'm using Pete's open GL driver 1.76

and SPU core 1.5.2 for sound

now the game runs smooth, everythings fine, but i notice theres some slight tearing depending on how i walk.. nothing too noticable.. same happens with FMV's..

i'm running the graphics input on NICE.. the thing is i set the full screen resolution to 1280X1024... does that effect the picture quality and possibly cause the screen tearing?

another question, how do i maximize visual performance besides just clicking the 'nice' button, according to my specs.

    thanks

    Use version 1.5.2.

    Try a different resolution.
