MAME save/load states HELP!

ok, how do you save and load?i have MAME32.
it says press Shift+F7, so i do, then it says select a position to save,so i press 1, then it says press F7 to load state,so i do and then it says load from position, then i press 1 and...nothing happens, so

How do you save and load save/load states?

To save press Shift F7, then a key to "name" the save state. To load the same state, press F7 then the same key.

i did, and it did the same thing.....

also most times it will say this:

Try a different game if you've only been trying the same. Save states don't work with all games.

F7 Load a save state. You will be requested to press a key to
determine which save state you wish to load. Note that the save
state feature is not supported for a large number of drivers. If
support is not enabled for a given driver, you will receive a
warning when attempting to save or load.

SHIFT+F7 Create a save state. Requires an additional keypress to identify
the state, similar to the load option above.
