    Hello,

As i said in the sony system tread, i'm new in emulatorworld....
But I downloaden chankast and a DCgame: Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2...
I burned it on a cd and it looks like it works fine... But now i see
everyone asking things about bootdiscs and mounting...
So i wanted to know why i can play this game without doin that?

how do you save btw in chankast?

You don't need to mount it because you burnt it
You don't need a boot disc because it is selfboot.

You don't have to burn the games if you don't want, you can use Daemon Tools (version 3.29 is recommended for DC emulation) and mount the image file in that virtual drive in case that you just want to test a game without burning it.

As for how to save, taken from the Chankast FAQ:

Q: I can't save my progress on any game. It says that there is no memory card or that the memory card does not have enough free blocks even though it's full. Why?
A: You have to create a memory card from the plugins configuration of the emulator; then run the emulator without a CD in the (virtual) drive and from the options screen that will show up choose the memory card icon and then choose the memory card and format it (fully erase it).

Personally I wish there was a way to use a 1:1 GD-ROM image so the original content doesn't have to be compressed causing the quality of the audio and video to be degraded. I know there is really no way to burn it (unless you happen to get your hands on a GD-ROM drive) but at least it can preserve the original games. I've stopped downloading DC images because I never can tell if I'm getting to original quality or not. I can make self-boot images myself easily but it would help to have a reason to do that with the original media from the GD-ROMs that are being shared instead of a watered down version of them.

Anyway sorry for going a little off topic there.

You have to understand that Chankast never made it past the Alpha stage of develpement before it was discontinued so if you are having problems with it as far as running games then chances are it may just not be compatible. It is still impressive how far they got though considering no other Dreamcast emulator can run commercial games at all.

DEMUL can run commercial games, but it's still in very early development, so it has speed issues among other problems (for some people it's too fast, for others too slow, speed varies from game to game, sometimes speed varies within games...still, it's worth trying out.

At least it isn't dead like ChanKast.

Oh yeah I forgot that they finally got a public release of the emulator and yeah it is very unstable. I personally would wait until they've fixed most of the bugs in it before using that again.

In the mean time while waiting for a decent Dreamcast emulator, you should pick up a cheap Dreamcast. Pre 2000, it'll be cool, playing all backups put in it without a mod.
And yeah - When the emulation does get good, I'm sure the scene will start again with Full GD dumps that are unusable on the system itself.

Actually if the DreamCast is NTSC, it has to be made before Oct 2000.
If it's PAL, the date of manufacture doesn't matter.

I like Chankast its pretty impressive. I like to see Ikaruga run on it. Since i have a widescreen LCD i can turn it on its side and get a huge view of the game which is awesome. It runs @ 1280x1024 and hits full frame rates here and there. ^^ Running Dc isos off the hard drive does make chankast run smoother. I have a Dreamcast also that plays burned games.
