Specifics will go a long way to helping us help you.

For instance, what console are you trying to load this gameshark file on? And for that matter, why don't you just use whatever emulator's built-in cheat system to input codes, as gameshark roms don't actually do anything when you load them?

Please reply, and we'll see about helping you out.

Maybe you're putting the cheats in wrong?

You have to specify what cheat device the codes are for before you put them in. For example, if they're GameShark codes, click the GS button, and it'll open up a window in which to input the cheats. If the codes are CodeBreaker codes, you'd do the same thing, only click on the CodeBreaker button instead. Once you have the codes all typed in and set up, you have to click the button labeled enable, otherwise nothing will happen.

Also, make sure whether or not a master code is required. If so, you need to put that in first.

I'm going to guess you downloaded a SPS or XPS file from GameFAQS, since you said that you "can't load a gameshark file", not gameshark code.

To use SPS & XPS files with GBA emulators, you need to convert the files to SAV's.

This tool can do that, but there's no guarantee the SAV will work afterwards:

Double click xps2sav.exe to open it.
Then for Input XPS file, type in the name of the .sps or .xps file, including the extension.

    Example: final_fantasy_v_advance.sps

Then for Output SAV file, type in whatever you want.

Now start VBA and load the rom into it.
Close VBA, and look inside the folder where you have the rom for a .sav file.

Click that .sav file to highlight it, then press F2, then press CTRL-C.
Now go to the sav file you made with xps2sav, click it, press F2, then CTRL-V.

Now copy the renamed sav file to the folder with the rom in it, and replace the sav file that you made with VBA.

Now start the game and the GameShark save should be loaded.

Keep in mind that a GameShark save is just that--a save file, and not a cheat file.
If you want to cheat, you'll have to use codes instead.

You have to type in the exact name of the file, including any underscores, and the extension.

Which means you have to unzip the GameShark file first.

Otherwise the program will just close.
